Well done on getting it sorted. :)
This thread should be a sticky on the pitfalls of buying a cheap 944 (Or an expensive bad one.) & why it isn't worth it! I actually spent more than you  Though I have had it on the road for over 3 years now. But get pretty tired of the guys who come on here & say that you can get good S2's for 2 to 3K. The enthusiast owned cars that have had the money spent on them & are only a bit more to buy than the tired examples (Typically 1 to 2K depending on model.) But are worth every penny. But you can't tell people. :bom:
Hope after all that you can have some fun with it now. :)

I tell you what, I would happily do it again and wouldn't swap it now - even for the E30 BMW 325i I was considering as an alternative.

You've been very honest in describing what you've spent & this is a good post. But I believe that prospective buyers should know what there getting into! I would have bought a different car had I known what I do now. You have your reasons for doing what you've done. And the satisfaction of transforming your car into something useable. Others may simply run out of money before they get there.

Ummm.... because I like them and because I can? I run my own business which has made me into a workaholic and therefore means I do not take many holidays. The money I would spend on holidays gets spent on cars and so the world goes round....

The RR is my day to day transport and is a fantastic vehicle, the 911 is my baby and comes out to play at weekends, the Defender is technically owned by my company and used for moving stuff, towing a horsebox, shooting and anything mucky, the Z4 is driven by my wife 99% of the time and is her daily transport, the 944 is really a bit of fun and a Porsche I can use every day when I don't want to use the RR. If I had a bigger driveway I would find a reason to have a couple more as well. :D

I totally agree with you - the car was bought off eBay whilst slightly intoxicated and could never ever be classed as deal of the decade. But having bought it, I wanted to get it up and running as the alternative was sell it on half-knackered and probably lose money. I would rather spend the money I did and be able to keep it and use it. But no way would I ever suggest that this was any form of investment and certainly not the most astute purchase I have ever made - but it IS a lot of fun now it is running properly! Like I said at the start, it should be classed as a "folly". :)

Residential property management and investment, but it isn't all that much fun.

I too bought mine on ebay while :drunken: Was actually looking for a shoping trolly. Should have seen the wifes face when I told her what I'd done. Errrrrrr no :blackeye: But I do love driving it & even she's learned to apreciate its mile munching properties.

If I was like you gordon I'd be driving a Suzuki or wouldn't be broke all the time.

Good lad! My wife drove Shed for the first time yesterday and she liked it as well. This means one of two things - either:

1. Our choice of car is very, very cool and universally popular.

2. We have accidentaly purchased girly cars and should be ashamed.

I sincerely hope it is the former.

Jesus, I thought I spent a bit on my 944 recently! (It's had a new lower arm and 968 castor mounts in my time, a new engine, with belts, cam timing, and the clutch all attended to and most recently 2 new tyres). Ok it's not the most tidy 944 (it could be worse mind), but it is at least a solid car, and as you said, these cars are made for driving and being enjoyed, not for being a garage queen.

Oh, I've also put on around 5,000 miles since I had it, and a further 200 yesterday :). It's a shame it ticks all the boxes so well!

I was lucky then. Mine was £1800 with no service history. Only spent just over £1500 on it so far. possible spend another 1K to get it sorted.

Makes me feel substantially better, thank you.

John you said this before & it is wrong. Number plate legislation is a bare minimum up to 2001 & before that most things are OK for the MOT. Mine has passed 2 MOTs now with the plates that are not the latest standards & they are OK.

I don't have a bee in my bonnet about number plates Jim, it's just that I am a very factual person - and I'm not wrong. Put what you like on your car - however, read the DVLA rules and you will see that your plates are also illegal (because of the badge on the left side). The reason they pass MOTs is usually because of a friendly person turning a blind eye. Cars registered before 1973 can have the black and white plates. Everybody else should adhere to the following rules - but I suppose that so many people just do what they want that nobody can be bothered enforcing the regulations....

Euro (and other flags) on number plates

Since 1st September 2001 you have been able to choose to display a Euro flag, for vehicles registered in the UK. The Euro-plate is a number plate that has the symbol of the European Union (a circle of 12 stars on a blue background) with the national identification letters of the member states below it (for example GB). This symbol is located on the far left-hand side of the number plate.
Vehicles displaying this Euro symbol on the number plate no longer have to use the traditional oval shaped national identifier (GB) sticker when travelling within the European Union. All vehicles registered in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have, by international convention, the distinguishing sign GB.

On 28 December 2001, the Government announced the intention to permit the display of national flags and national identifiers on vehicle number plates. The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 are in the process of being amended. They will provide for the voluntary display of the Union flag, Scottish Saltire, Cross of St George and Red Dragon. Football team crests etc. are not allowed.

What you must not do with your number plate...
The law states that:
You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).
That means:
No stylised letters
Don't move the space around
Don't misrepresent letters / numbers using screws or fixings
Don't misrepresent letters / numbers using squashed or distorted letters
No images other than the approved flags (no football emblems, etc)
Full details of the requirements are included in The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001
