I travelled as far as I had to to get together a collection of limited edition 924s. I live in North Wales and the cars came from Bournemouth, Bromsgrove, Hounslow and Chertsey. But the next and final one is only a couple of miles from me!

I travelled to Torquay for my 944 as it's a good one and I will travel anywhere in the UK for the right car. My 944S2 Cabrio on the other hand came from 5 miles down the road.

For reference, I drive 120 miles round trip to work each day :)

IMO the bottom ends rarely go on the 944s. They are very strong indeed and can take quite a bit of punishment (I have first hand experience of that). I'd listen out to the engine sounding dodgy etc. Even a poorly S2 will still make around 150 at the wheels IMO (I reckon mine was making around 180BHP with a rattly piston).

I would keep on looking for the right car, but get ready to spend a little more than £2.5 and to get a car with the necessary things changed (clutch, suspension etc.) in addition to a good interior etc. Then you will have a superb car that will need little spending on it.

I have been from Warwick to the Isle of Grain to get a car before, but the furthest was Dundee (oddly it was one the best cars we had). My 944 came from Derby/Sheffield where the previous owner had it for 8 years.

On the Weltmiester dyno an S2 made 125 at the wheels recently. I've heard of some that were worse. They wear out like anything else. It's condition thats the key. Not what they did 20+ years ago when they were new. You may be lucky at 2.5K but you wouldn't get my car for that & it's not an S2. It can out drag quite a few though! :)

I still reckon most can do around 140 at the wheels. My old GTi-6 did 135 ATW on some pessimistic rollers (was stock bar a Jetex exhaust and a rebuilt head) (a guy with a Focus ST170 got less power than I did (around 159 compared to 165 stock)) with a fraction of the miles that I had, and the S2 would still make the 306 struggle even with the knocking engine. Bear in mind that the S2 and Series 2 cars also have a 100kg weight penalty over most hot hatches too which is why I came to my conclusion.

The good ones make 180-185. But they don't all. A stock 8v n/a in good condition does 140. I'm hoping for more when I get mine finished.

I went to a Mini show in Rockford Illinois and some guys I know drove from San Francisco to there and back in their 1000cc Minis.
Stopping around 30 times IIRC

And one who trailers his cars from Canada to Florida every year for a show there, he was also at Rockford

The 120 miles takes about 1.5 hours....not to bad of a drive. About 45 min up and back.
