Although I have just registered for the board, I have been reading it for some time.

I have always loved the 944 from the time it first came out. I have to say, age has certainly not withered it - it is still as attractive now as it has always been.

Now, I am at the stage of life when I can afford to buy and run one as a second car - one little problem and this is the dilemma - Mrs Sons FC is implacably opposed to Porsche as a marque.

As you can imagine, this has caused some distress over the years. I very nearly persuaded her to allow me to buy one some years ago but I compromised and bought a Lotus instead. It was a beautiful car but it was never out of the garage for a virtually new car it was appalling - Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious was never so apt. All the time I drove it though I kept thinking it was not the car I wanted.

The same happened when I had a new Jaguar - it still wasn't a 944.

I am one of these people who believe that deep down, no matter what car people drive, they would rather be driving a Porsche (I know that is not true but hey).

So what to do to persuade the good lady - in a good way - no beheadings, divorces etc. Sons FC Jr who is 6 years old is very much on daddies side on this.

I am sure some other people here will have been through the same dilemma - any thoughts on strategies?

Have you thought of just buying one and then filling the (huge) boot up with expensive shoes or handbags or something before driving it home? It could work …

Nice idea.

Another option was to buy a car and keep it at my brother's house. Only trouble is I don't want to be deceitful and he lives in Scotland, 400 miles away.

Mrs Sons FC has now said she *may* be agreeable some time in the future so all may not be lost yet.

You can do a lot wrong between now and then.

Go buy it what's the worse she can do, sulk and not talk to you. Result all round. :)

Have a goose in her wardrobe and pick out all the clothes with tags on that have never been worn.

God Sean you like living dangerously  Typical Smallman Tact & diplomacy e.g. NIL

Not sure where you live Mr Son FC but why not take her along to your local TIPEC regional meet & let her look around the cars, maybe get taken out for a spin? After the Bromley Pageant one of our guys who is a regular at meetings, but never brings his wife. As they walked away his wife was heard to say "why don't you take me to meetings?" "Everyone has a good laugh & the wifes are nice & I get on really well with them?"

That is a great idea.

I was going to wait until I actually owned a car before joining the TIPEC, would we be able to come along without being members?

Buy one & point out that the price they are now will never get any cheaper & it makes perfect sense to do so. You can buy well sorted tidy 944's for peanuts at the moment & you'd be a fool not to. You will save a fortune with classic insurance & joining Tipec will save you even more. Theres even a nice turbo for sale on here now! I went on eBay nearly 3 years ago to buy a sensible cheap car & bought a 944. The wife is now talking to me. It only took nearly 3 years! Highly recommended :D

Of course you can! In fact in some ways I wish people would before they buy a car. I talk to quite a few that would have made slightly different choices if they had. You might get your arm twisted to become a member but it's only gentle twisting 'onest
Where do you live & we can tell you whose area you would be in?

Jims bob on. Had I joined the club first & then bought a 944 I would have bought a better. More expensive one. And saved myself the 3K it cost to sort out. :| :bom: Helps a lot if you know more about them. Parts for these are now not so cheap thanks to the weak pound & stronger Euro so you should get the best you can!

I take a couple of calls a week from people who have bought the wrong car.

It's good advice to pop along and get a feel for what looks good and how much you should be paying for it.
