I've towed a lot over the years, everything from caravans (sorry!) to boats & cars. I've towed with everything from a 1500 Lada to V6 Granadas.
A decent trailer for a 924 will be at least 350kG, even lightweight single seater ones are 250+.
The caravan club talk about the caravan being 85% of the weight of the car, but caravans are different in that you fill them with all manner of crap to go away with. So I'd reckon you'd be looking at a rig weighing around 1,400-1,500kG so that puts you in a Mondeo/5 series type car. Probably estates because of the other bits you'll need such as spare wheels, jack, wheel brace etc. The other option is a transit type van. Good towing ability & the ability to sleep/work in it should the need arise. Then run the 1 series (if you must....) & just use the van as a tow wagon at weekends.
