Yet another Newbie from West Sussex

Hi, saw your Forum and decided to join. Enthusiasts are always the best placed to give advice about actually living with a car.

I've arranged to view a 944 Cab in a few weeks. Never owned a Porsche, but have always quite liked the shape of the 924, 944 & 928. Probably dates back to first seeing them on the Autobahn on our family holidays to Switzerland. We would always be in a Ford Granada (he had 4 on the trot) and these new Porsches really looked fantastic compared to the 3 box saloons of the time. Remember how radical everyone thought Ford was when the Sierra came out.

I welcome any advice anyone has for the 944 Cab Auto. I would assume this must be almost the least popular version nowadays. Personally, I think the open top almost makes up for the loss of coupe looks and it still has pop up headlights (can't help buying cars with them).

Recent work on the one I'm interested in has involved replacing the Heater and welding the exhaust. I suspect the car has been living outside most it's life so I'm fearful rust may be there, but not sure where the real problem areas are.

944 Cab is a good choice. The engine needs to have belts and timing chain tensioners and chain done. As for rust then that is sills, rear torsion bar mounts. The arches and bottoms of the wings can rot but that is more obvious.

Thanks Jim, the guy selling the car is a friend and can be trusted. I'll ask him about the belts. The car is a bit scruffy, but hate poking around other people's car. The embarrassment if I stuck a finger through a Sill. Being kept outside should show if the hood leaks.

Funny enough, if you replaced the word 'belts' with 'chains' you could be describing what to look out for when buying a Stag. I have one of those, but am looking for something that I don't have to drive with 1 eye on the temp gauge.
