I was reading the other post regarding the Promax Chip which sounds like a good upgrade, on the Promax website it suggest better used with cone filter and a straight through exhaust which gives rise to my question....

If I upgrade my Air filter on my 944s2 what does everyone recommend? and if I wanted a straight through exhaust does any know the best place to go, My mid section is shot anyway so just need a pipe from manifold to back box I suppose? will this be effect the sound, I don't want to sound like a boy racer!

Please forgive what maybe stupid questions...I'm new to all this!

Thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam

I don't have an S2 so my comments are just 'in general' regarding filters/exhausts no matter which car. For filters, I'd go K&N, imho they are the best although there are others not dis-simular. If you want a straight through exhaust it will sound different and there's no real way of telling until it's on the car. However if, as you imply you only intend to change the mid-section then the difference won't be so intrusive as you're keeping the same sized pipework. Now as I said I'm not familiar with the S2 and it's exhaust layout, on the 'Turbo' the mid-section has a baffle and replacing this with a straight through section would increase the sound but not as mush as if the pipe size was increased and the back box was changed for a straight through too.
Also, if you can find a place for a K&N cone outside of the engine bay you should get more rewards in performance than just using a K&N filter replacement.

Cheers

Pete

Hi Adam,
I had/have both Cone Filter and Powerflow exhaust fitted to my 2.7.

However, I removed the Cone Air Filter as I found that the air flow into the engine bay didn't suit its position. The Cone was mounted high in engine bay where the standard air filter ducts the air from low down at the front of the car straight into the filter housing. With the Cone Filter I found the engine hesitant under heavy acceleration due to the lack of air and therefore didn't feel any significant performance improvement but it did sound nice as you could hear it sucking the little air it could get!! However, when I changed back to standard the engine behaved better. I'm sure that if you can duct the airflow up to where the Cone Filter is positioned this would help, I couldn't be bothered for the marginal increase it would have given me!

I do still have a stainless steel Powerflow Exhaust fitted as mine was suffering from the same symptoms as yours, this sounds great especially when its on song!!! Each Powerflow exhaust is made to suit your own requirements i.e. as to how loud you would like it etc. I personally think mine gives a nice rumble when tootling around and as I say a good roar when on song. But, on steady motorway driving its mumberling away in the background without being annoying. Does it give an increase in performance, I'm sure it does but just don't expect instant neck breaking acceleration. It does decrease my fuel consumption somewhat but I think that's due my driving from wanting to hear the sweet tunes from that exhaust.

I'd certainly say fit an exhaust, if only for the sound it gives. If you visit powerflowexhausts.co.uk you'll be able to find the nearest retailer to you. As for the filter I'd replace the standard one with a K & N item.

Unfortunately, I've no experience of chips but let us know how you get on? But, above mods are all about improving the flow of air and gases to and from the engine i.e. if more air goes in then more fuel is required. This is where a tuned chip would improve performance but personally I'd rather get the car tuned after these modifications rather than buy an off the shelf chip!

Hope this helps!

Tony

If it were me I'd stick with the stock filter, but changed on a regular basis and get a custom made exhaust setup.

Depends where in the country you are i guess - I have a Hayward & Scott exhaust on mine. I hear good things about AAS (i think?) In Newcastle.

You can buy a K&N to sit where the standard air box goes. I'm a bit sceptical that it makes any difference to performance. You can hear it at WOT though :)

Oh, and my car has a Promax chip..

btw The biggest performance boost was fitting a fresh engine

I fitted a K&N filter on my S2. I also removed the baffle plate on the filter housing (use a screw driver to do this). This allows more air into the intake.

Get a decent stainless exhaust system - a free-flow mid box is best for performance...

If it helps, i have a promax chip, i tried a K&N panel filter with standard air box, then modified air box, then fitted a large cone filter right up front in the cold air flow, i have also made my own cat bypass pipe and am running just the Dansk rear box, it revs cleanly right up to the rev limiter, indicates 155mph no problem, its a 944 s2 cab,And its not to loud, infact its quiet i think.

Thanks RapidStu, would you be able to send me a photo of your air filter? Also ..I assume the Rev limiter is something you fitted, and not a factory part?

Hi Adam

I think Stuart may be referring to the factory set limiter which all models have, IIRC the turbo is around 6700 although mine is set a little higher, not sure what it is for the S2 though.

So would that be set before the redline? so in effect I max the throttle to the limiter or will I still blow up the engine?

The limiter is set at a level that protects the engine, you won't blow it up by hitting the limiter but it's not something that you want to do on a regular basis, don't forget that these engines (if original) are getting on a little now, they are strong but not indestructible.....

The S2's rev limiter kicks in at 6480+-20rpm as standard, according to the factory manual (and from memory ~ 6500 is correct). The Promax chip raises that limit somewhat (+300rpm?).

The S (2.5 16v) revved to 6840rpm stock.

I encounter it occasionally. I hope to bother it quite frequently this weekend in my little run around Wales (although never intentionally exceeding the speed limit of course).
