My glorious wife had another surprise for me today. We visited the Haynes musuem near Yeovil today. We had a great day. Pictures to follow. When we got back i had some time for the 944.
One of the rear light clusters had a crack in the indicator, an advisory on the MOT. So i found a replacement. Old one out:



It took a bit of persuasion (translates to sitting in the boot and kicking the old one out). Black silicone ordered ready to fit the new unit. Some krust applied to some minor corrosion near the tail light.

I also found time to clean the boot area - I quite like the stripped out look. Decisions decissions. Do i put the old carpet back in?



I wanted to put the front light trims back on, but found that the screws had all snapped in the fittings.


One question for the TIPEC 944 community.....How do i get these old screws out???

I recently did the front bumper lights on mine and snapped all screws in the process. The screws holding the lights in thread into hexagon bodied rivunts. I found that mine pushed out backwards without too much difficulty, but then I had space to work around them... I put a socket behind it (around 10mm I think) and used a torx bit on the front to push on the broken screw, then squeezed with a pipe wrench.





I imagine the one's you can't get tools around might push out with a punch... not sure if you would need to brace the rear or if the bumper is strong enough there.

For replacing them, I didn't find any rivnuts I was confident were right, so bought some M4 nuts to put in there, however the hexagon body of the rivnut is quite a bit smaller than the M4 standard... I ended up just bolting through the holes to a nut on the other side and putting it on the 'to sort another time' list :/

Thanks Gryphon. I might drill the screws out and use nuts and bolts straight through the holes to hold this in place.
The metal bracket located near the indicator to hold the other side of the trim is also missing on one side of my car. I will have to fabricate something to suit.

My new Aluminium pressed number plates (supposed to be legal, but dont have a postcode or BS mark on the front)arrived. Installed the rear without too much effort.

Front was a little harder - there is a bumper bar that weighs a ton - I removed it - some stubbon screws and nots of damaged knuckles later.....

Finally installed the front plate at the right height. The old original plate was too high and sould be seen from the driving seat!


Next, I sorted the wiring for the car stereo and replaced the large knob for the heater control. The original knob just span in the socket and didnt switch the motor between speeds.




The stereo seemed to work when we first drove the car home, but now it was dead. I removed it and saw that all the wires (including power) were jsut twisted together! A soldering iron and lots of effort later and sorted. Issue now was that the sound was better from one speaker than the other - why?

Whilst in the car, I removed the steering wheel and re-installed straight. The view from todays office:

I might buy another complete front with the additional driving lights in the apron.

Lastly, round the back. One of the tail marker lights wasnt working - I looked into this and wires just twisted together again.....Groan. I have put these back for now as they work - but will get round to sorting this.
Whilst here i opened up the securing mechanism for the tailgate.

Cleaned and greased - still doesnt work. My list for parts is growing fast.

That is the insert that centres the tailgate pins, they disintegrate over time and then the locks don't work, only944 on line do a replacement for these, I fitted them to mine they work a treat. They arrived in a week from the States and aren't very expensive. Try this link.

I had some time to continue with the project today. The weather was bad.

Ive lost some confidence with the car in recent days. Today I got in the car and turned the key - nothing. Nothing at all.
Checked the battery - 1.2V across the terminals. I got scared - Is this something that I have done, whilst messing around with the wiring?


I put my CTec charger onto the battery and it wouldnt even see it as a battery - I bought out the old charger and this kept tripping. Groan.


Left it to charge like this for a while and then put it back on the CTEC - It recognised it this time, but at full charge the voltage is just over 12v. I have a feeling that the battery maybe shot - but will get it checked.

Whilst the battery was out, i took some time to check the tray - It showed some signs of corrosion - I covered in Krust and will hammerite black tomorrow.

Next, onto the sunroof - which you might recall was glued shut!
I removed the clamps holding it in place to check what was lurking behind. Got inside the car and pushed it out.

I immeadiatly noticed a broken air diverter tab. Calling CocaCola!!!


There should be two arms to electrically raise and lower the roof.

Right, I had a day off work today. Its Easter holidays and I am off with the kids to supervise them. They are 13 and 10 - they will be alright themselves right? Dont go nea the kettle, oven or microwave.

Off to the garage....

I really want to get the car on the road now as I have taxed it. Sitting is not doing it any good as i noticed that the discs have gone rusty.

We live in a country where it rains all the time, so i wanted to get the sunroof back in and working. You might remember that the previous seller had glued it in place. He told me that it was because it was leaking, so i decided to clear the drain tubes. I used strimmer cord, and threaded it down the four sunroof drain tubes. The front ones seemed clear and exited at the bottom of the windscreen. Water down and YES - clear!
The rear tubes were a pain. Stimmer cord just went in and never came out. One side was because of this:



I strecthed the pipe and heated with a hot air gun and managed to seal it onto the sunroof. I will check this again tomorrow to see if it has fallen off again. You can see that the headlining is thin, like paper, so tore at my touch!

The other side was connected, but the cord didnt exit. Does anyone know where the rear sunroof drain tubes exit? I looked in the wheel arches and nothing was obvious.

So when the key is in the ignition, with the ignition switched off, I can hear a noise (like relay) clicking on swith press, but nothing happens at the motor. With the igntion in postion 2 - nothing happens. Is this right?

You might recall that this is what my roof looks like:



with the all important brackets where the arms will engage blocked up. What should this area look like - HELP?



I am going to seal it back in place tomorrow and try and use the car. I will order the parts to repair and do this as and when i have time. No point wasting driving time waiting to get everything 100% right (which will never happen).

So i got a few hours on the 944 today. Thanks to help from another forum I managed to find the rear drain tubes for the sunroof. I poured really hot water down the tubes and all four are clear!

I have ordered a new sunroof but wanted to get the old one back in place to get the car useable. When I removed the old one and pulled off the seal, part of the roof itself came away - damn! So i had to get busy with the P38.



A couple of the screw holes in the roof were also broken, so P38 in there too!



Drill out and a self tapper - Bob is indeed, ones uncle!

Whilst playing, I took a couple of snaps of the inner sills through the vents on the B Post. Previous owner had told me that this area had been Waxoiled after the sills had been replaced. I dont see any of this?

Can anyone reccomend what to squirt down here to ensure no future rot? Is WaxOil still something people use, or is there better now?

Cleaned up the plugs and let her run for a while. But noticed that 1. The fans dont seem to kick in. Any ideas? and 2. There is a squeeling noise coming from the belt housing.

I'm enjoying this thread. You seem to be making good progress.

The sills don't look too bad to my untrained eye. I used Bilt Hamer waxes when I did mine. The S50 product is recommended for cavities and apparently creeps into all the seams. Best to do it when the weather is a bit warmer which makes for much easier application. They provide a long wand with every two cans which makes getting into the furthest parts a bit easier. I also used their UB product which they recommend for under body applications. I found them quite helpful when asking for advice too.

One 750ml aerosol will easily do both sills. You'll need to buy a long piece of tubing to reach right along the sill.

If you can, get your hand down inside the hole and take lots of pictures towards the front of the car whilst varying the angle slightly each time - hopefuly one of them will show you the state of the inner sills.

Oh, and make sure all the drain holes in the sill are clear when you've finished.

Car dropped off at JMG Porsche in Wimbourne for the inspection on Tuesday and it made it all the way there without missing a beat!
I left home at 08:45 and was there by 10:30 and do you know what? I fell in love with the car during the drive. It was so special. Not the fastest, not the comfiest, but it felt like a dog that just wanted to please me. The smell, the noise.....fantastic!!!
I drove out of Marlborough, towards Salisbury and then down towards Ringwood. Not many places to pass other traffic, except a small 1/2 mile stretch as you leave Salisbury - foot to the floor - WOW!!!!

A few quirky things noticed - i think the discs might be warped and the speedo shows your speed +/- 20mph....... I did manage to stretch her legs too - 100 ahems on a clear stretch of country road too. It made me feel like a million bucks and I have really bonded with the car now. You will probably laugh at me, but since i bought her, I havent used her at all. This was the first outing in two months. I wasted all that time....idiot.

I left the car at JMG garage and they were kind enough to give me a quick tour around. Plenty of modern stuff kicking about - nice but boring. A 'graveyard' out the back full of Porsche exotica - more 944 turbos than you can shake a stick at, an out of place Bentley S1, 928s, racing 924 and a couple of early 911s.

I exchanged the keys to my new best freind to those of a 2000 Mercedes A class and this was the parting shot until next Saturday.



I miss her already and the garage is empty without my freind......
