Just thought i would check this as it is not 100% clear from tech manual. There are a couple of metals straps under the fuel tank, do they just hold the shielding in place or do they support th tank as well?

Mine are looking pretty grotty so wanted to whip them off and clean up and paint, but dont want the tank dropping out unexpectedly, that would be a bad day.

If you have the plastic tank (you have an 86 so should have), then the straps are not the only fixings that hold the tank, there are two large plates toward the middle that take the weight. However, the weight of fuel in the tank can distort the plastic when you take the strap off, making it a bit more difficult to get back on. I would suggest just popping a plate of wood and a jack under the tank to hold it in place, then you can remove/replace the strap easily.

Ok, thanks. Its just the one stap that needs attention, around the deeper section of tank. The trans axle is still in place so the tank cant go too far. I will leave the second strap in place and support the tank. Cheers

Just a thought and tip.I did my strap last week. Took it off and it fell to pieces. Bought a strip of aluminium from B&Q and bolted the 2 end lugs to it. . bit of bending and good as new.

I ended up doing exactly the same with mine, good ol' B&Q.
