Hi, On a 1992 S2 my hatch lock only works through the micro switch / motor,
If you disconnect the power there is no mechanical device on the key / barrel
to activate the lock !
It does not appear to of had anything (obvious) removed from the lock and I can't find a picture of the mechanism to match against !

So there is no mechanical link at all ?

None whatsoever! So guess how you have to get to the battery when it's dead

Apply power to the post under the bonnet?

Sound advice from Jim...as long as you have the post! My 944S doesn't have the mechanical linkage for the hatch, and also doesn't have the +ve post. I have a feeling that you always get the post if you have the ABS option, as my last S did have that and a post was fitted. Porsche may have changed the build for the S2 though, especially if lots of people complained On many occasions I have had to extract the battery through the car with the hatch down...it is not fun.

There is a mechanical manual link - but you have to crawl into the back, under the glass hatch, remove the carpet button pegs to get to the motor cables. Grab the left (your left) cable with pliers and tug it back to the right - this should open the pegs. If the other side is still jammed - you will have to fiddle with the link motor peg - a person outside will help to encourage the lift...

I have never understood this - engine bonnets are always on a manual cable. Boot lids electric...? Even in my day working with old Ferraris - the lids were all cable...

On my 944S I can open the hatch with the button or by using the key. Is that not how its supposed to be?!

My 944S would only open on the motor. There is a key barrel but it just turned and didn't appear to do anything. After a lot if thought I found that there should be a peg coming out if the rear of the lock barrel that rubs against the cam that then moves the rods. Not a brilliant idea and will wear through eventually as mine did. I remove what was left of the old pin and replaced with the masonry nail you get in a 2.5 cable clip. Tapped in nicely, just had trim the length. I now have both locks.
