It must have been the pre-mixed Mojito's reacting with a surfeit of weissbier at Silverstone this weekend, but a recurring fever dream has resurfaced: would it be genius or insanity to 'imagineer' a 944-based version of the legendary Buchmann 928 Targa?

I have considered this fabulous device to represent the very apex of automotive evolution ever since I clapped eyes on it in an issue of Car and Driver in 1980, and have frequently dreamt of commissioning a recreation. Sadly, with the number of series 1/2 928's dwindling (and seemingly appreciating at alarming levels) I reckon it may be both sacrilegious and economical unrealistic to attempt. Perhaps controversially, I'd think it less sacrilegious to do something similar on a 924/44 base, given the greater number of cars and simpler mechanical base.
I can see the profile of the 928 might work better than the 924/44 for the boot treatment, but it would still be very very cool, and at the end of the day it's all about the targa panels and the preposterous 80's component hi-fi rammed into the T-bar.
Anyone else drinking what I'm drinking? Or even better, anyone know if it's already been attempted?
(If I bottle it, I may have to settle for vinyl rainbow graphics and b+b logo's on my Lux...)
