Tested Oil pressure sender and gauge today. Sender and wiring all good but my gauge is goosed!

Fitted Hartech competition spec front wishbones. Pretty straightforward apart from the ball joint pins are not waisted. They have a groove which aligns with the retaining bolt, so it's easier to fit the pin first, then front bush followed by caster block. Have to throw steering to get the long bolt in and out of the front bush otherwise there is no clearance from the track rod. Managed to cut a rubber boot on the ball joint, temp repair with silicone sealer, will replace boot later. Geo now totally up spout, so off to Unit11 next week. Very impressed with Fuchs 15W/50, engine quieter and oil pressure much better than with Magnatec 10/w40 not cheap though.
Just a moan about a 2% +vat surcharge on Debit(business card) this amounted to £15.60, it is the first time my debit card has had a surcharge and I'm not at all happy, I though the OFT had stopped this, caveat emptor.

I cursed it, that's what I did to my 944 today. On what is probably the hottest day of the year so far, the sunroof decided to start playing up. Again. At least it's stuck closed rather than open ! A few weeks ago, I had the same problem, cleaned up the front microswitch and the relays under the dash and in the boot - but that didn't seem to have any effect until a few days later when it decided to start working again of its own accord. :x :x :x This car's got too much of a personality.

They have personalities alright :)

She's now back on original 16" Cup 1's on new tyres.... and is looking good :D

Image

Downside is the wheel wobble felt last weekend at speed is still there :( I had put it down to a wheel loosing a weight that could be sorted with a rebalance but on the Cup 1's with new tyres having been balanced it can't be the wheels.....

I wondered if it could be a disc out of true but there's no feeling of wobble or vibration in the brake pedal...

Will have to investigate further but I'm driving the Reasonably Priced Car at Top Gear tomorrow so won't have time until Sunday. Will have to go in the Jag...

Some nice shiny cars of late - looking good :)

Haven't really posted much lately, but I've been plodding away with a few little jobs on my 951, haven't really used it much this year, which has annoyed me.

Over the winter she developed a tailight problem, it wasn't the lamp as I had replaced it previously, so it must be a connection issue. A few days later a car wash session confirmed the cause, the clusters were filling with water, lol!!

So I removed both rear light units to clean up the corrosion, and rewire as necessary.

This is how they started, don't look too bad in these pics, but the contact points were pretty crusty - seems I didn't get a photo of the other side!

Image20150218_174441 by Hallsy01, on Flickr

So I removed the lamp holders and cleaned them up as best I could:

Image20150219_181532 by Hallsy01, on Flickr

Then I cleaned the backing plates, replaced the crimps and repaired any cracked cabling - looking much better now:

Image20150220_180143 by Hallsy01, on Flickr

The water is getting in in the usual places - hatch latch seals and the tailamp seals. I replaced the original mastic on my previous 944S and it's a tedious job getting it all off & perfectly clean. That's fine if you only ever intend to remove the lights once or twice in your ownership, but I have some paintwork planned for my 951 later in the year, so have decided ratehr than faffing about with the mastic each time, I have bought some neoprene gasket tape - hopefully it will be just as effective, but still allowing easy removal of the lights if necessary. The tape is still on my to do list, now the good weather is here I will get it done - I've a week off week after next so aiming to get a few bits done.

Also over the winter period I had developed a bit of a tap which I suspected to be a sticky lifter. A couple of Porsche specialists had suggested trying a flush before going to bother of stripping the cambox down, and a friend of mine at a local Porsche/VAG specialist gave me a Forte engine flush and protector to try, which was nice of him :)

So I left the engine flush idling for 40 mins, then drained and topped up with fresh Total Quartz 10w50 and a new Mahle OC142 - annoying as the oil was only 500 miles old!!!

It does sound a little quieter, but I won't know for sure until I actually give her a proper run again. Whilst I was waiting for the flush to do it's business I removed the clocks as the temp gauge has been iffy since I bought the car, that and the centre vents are loose, so I wanted to do something to tighten those up.

The clocks had had the rugby balls cleaned up previously, but I removed the individual temp/fuel gauge and made sure all connections were nice and clean, etc, also cleaned up the contacts on the resistor. Put it all back together ready to give it a try and..................the battery was flat!!

So she's on the trickle charger at the mo, hopefully I will find the time to give it a try over the weekend.

Then it's on to the next possible issue, I have a mild vibration on drivers side at idle - I suspect engine mount has failed. Annoying, as it hasn't long been replaced, but there was a mention from an indy having to shorten the bolts some time after it had been done, so possible it had been punctured due to using the wrong length bolts, also the heatshield looks very new, so depending when that was replaced it may have died prematurely due to heat.

Not sure yet, need to get underneath and measure it. But I suspect I'll be changing it.

Then hopefully I can start driving her again :D

Got fed up looking at the peeling and flaking paint around the hatch glass, so scrapped off all i could get at then masked up with fine lining tape and painted it in with Dinitrol Black Glass Bonding Primer.

Decided tonight to service the CV joints so dropped the drivers side and straight away found a bolt that had sheared at some point and just holding itself in place! Drilled out what was left, cleaned the joints up and filled them in clean new grease. Hoping to do the passenger side on Sunday night and see if its a little quieter after.

Spent all day cleaning and polishing ready for Trentham in the morning...

Very happy with the Cup 1's now they're cleaned up.... a bargain at £124 for the set :)

Image

Image

Fitted my new glove box hinges.... bit of a PITA as I had to grind out some of the plastic from the main body of the tray to give enough room for the fitting to seat behind the inside cover.... even worse where the old ones had snapped off and PO had filled it with silicone... not overly happy with the end result as they only just catch to hold the lid from dropping on my knees... these might be metal but I should have taken Martins advice and bough a plastic tool box and cut the corners off....

Image

Also took my windscreen wiper linkage off to see where it was loose causing the judder in the wiper blade... looks like this isn't the first time its been an issue... yet another bodge from the PO.... Looks like it could just be a grommet of some kind but worst case may need a new linkage arm but I believe they could be a few quid.... eBay calling....

Put my 951 in for MOT today - I was a little nervous as I haven't really used it much so far this year, and haven't had it up in the air since last year.

She failed :(

But thankfully nothing serious - wiper blade, front indicators, rear foglight & tell tale.

I have had the indicators play up after wet weather or car wash before, so hopefully just poor connections, but I am surprised by the rear fog as I recently refurbed the lamp holders and checked all lamps.

My own fault for not checking the basics this morning, but time was not on my side!!

MOT season continues... At least it's seems an easy fix for you Hallsy :)

Took mine to meet Fuzz Townshend at a classic car meet in Cheshire tonight.... Good turnout with a cracking well used D-Type there as well... Had to wear the 968uk T-shirt :)

Looks like a nice little turn out, can't beat some classic cars with beer! Shame Fuzz got dressed in the dark

Back to the MOT station this afternoon and now a clean bill of health for 12 months.

One of them was a very easy fix, as I had said, I was pretty sure the fogs were OK as I had recently refurbed the lamp holders - sure enough, they were working fine - MOT tester obviously hadn't turned the front fogs on first

Likewise, wiper blades, some nice new Bosch Super Plus went in place of the nackered old ones.

Drivers side indicator wasn't so easy though. Removed lens and could see what the problem was, plenty of corrosion and the lamp was stuck solid. Smashed glass and tried to remove, but no joy, had to get the housing out. This wasn't as easy as I had thought, I undid the two mounting nuts but it wouldn't budge, as if it was held in the middle. I didn't want to risk breaking it as I had to get it back to MOT station for midday before work, so off with the batwing & brake duct - then a firm shove from behind and it was out!! Seems that the drain tube was preventing me from pulling it out the first time, I should have just pulled a bit harder, lol!!

Image20150626_101037 by Hallsy01, on Flickr

Don't worry, I wasn't drinking the plus gas

Image20150626_101115 by Hallsy01, on Flickr

Just a little crusty!

Removed the lamp holder and gave it a good clean up, I was short of time so didn't get it perfect, but made sure the contact points were clean, I will probably replace the lamp holder at a later date.

Still doesn't look great, but was making contact in the right places :D

Image20150626_105211 by Hallsy01, on Flickr

God knows how it got so wet as the passenger one was pretty much mint inside, maybe the drain tube was blocked/squashed.

Next on the list is to measure my drivers side engine mount to saisfy my paranoia that it could be past it's best, then I can put some miles on the clock again!!

Terrible rattle from the clutch though, don't know whether it is release bearing or the torque tube (TT is quiet when on the move) - not really an issue as such, but it does detract from the experience a little when your car sounds like a ball bearing filled washing machine at the traffic lights!! Something else for the 'to do' list, lol!!

Glad you got it sorted Hallsy and welcome to the rattle club ;) it is a tad embarrassing at the lights or any stopping point

Blackadder30 - I've seen those metal glove box stays and thought they might be a good replacement - I don't get what you mean by Martin's suggested plastic tool box though? How would that work?

Cheers

find a small plastic tool box in B&Q or wherever that has nice tight corners then mark out and cut out the plastic to make a new catch, the corners provide the 90 degree bend.

nice and cheap fix
