Due to an overzealous approach to parts acquisition - - these shock units are surplus to my requirements.

Check ECP listing on Eb'stards for other models that they will fit without modification, but I'd planned to use them in my S2 struts by chopping off the top part of the damper casing and welding on the threaded section of a Golf strut ... I never did it as I got my hands on a set of 968 struts instead.

How about £85.00 delivered for the pair??

Potentially I'd like to say yes, but I don't understand how you fit this. Where's the bracket for the bolt holes to the hub, and the ledge for the spring? I thought that was all welded together, or does the shock absorber pull out of the bracket?

The struts can be disassembled and these cartridges dropped in in place of the old damper unit. Check on YouTube for the German guy doing Golf Struts, the procedure is identical and not too challenging..

Any chance of a link? I'm good with the internet and all that, but there's many videos of this. I'd like to see the video you referred to.

The German one was the most helpful. It looks like the new shocks should come with the appropriate nut, cap, and boot to reassemble. Do I need to buy these separately or they included?

Sorry for all the questions. They are compatible and a good deal, so I'll take them, I'm just making sure I know what to expect.

Yes, new top nuts and new collar nuts are included ...

The boot - is that the shroud over the piston rod?? But anyhoo, the only parts I have are the cartridges, collar and top nuts...

Not convinced they will fit the S. I ordered replacements for my S from ECP prior to checking what struts I had and it turned out that mine are not the ones with inserts.

AFAIK ... there are two normal types (excluding M030 stuff...) the early struts which have the removable collar and the later S2 and 968 units that are pressed/crimped together. I'm not sure if the original intention was for the collared ones to be rebuildable, but it does mean that it gives you access to the gubbins inside.

As you can see in Herman's video, the whole of the old damper is removed - the damper rod, piston and flow valves/discs leaving the strut as an empty tube. All of the old gubbins is redundant and can be binned as the cartridge simply slides into the now empty tube and is secured by the new collar nut. Replace the spring and top mount and away you go..

Pretty straightforward really, just spring compressors required. Now, as I am such a gent, if anyone wants these dampers but doesn't have compressors, I'm more than happy to lend mine to the buyer for the duration of the job ... Can't say fairer than that!

I'll have them!

I spoke to a few friends today about how this job is accomplished, and I understand it totally now. I have a local friend with the spring compressors.

PM me with you payment details!

Not all ... my 944S2 and the 968s have crimped tops which you can't rebuild ...

Well, that's not strictly true, if you're stuck with the crimped tubes, you can do this if you have some old donor struts (which are incidentally different so can't just be interchanged) ... Some older Golfs have screw topped struts whose ID is the same as the OD of the Porsche strut so with a bit of brave measurement and a hacksaw you can lop the tops off both and weld the threaded section of the golf strut onto the now shortened 944/68 strut... Hey Presto a collar topped strut that fits a 944/68!

G

PM incoming...
