I had 16 inch cup wheels on the 924s race car when it was delivered, with Michelin low profile Pilot Cup Sports. The car was over tyres and under steered.

I changed to 15 x 8 wheels and less low profile Toyo tyres and the handling was much improved.

It's not just the looks!

I run 9" wheels on all corners with 225/45/17 Conti Sport 5 tires, Carrera GTS geometry settings and the car is planted and neutral.
Maybe its your springs/dampers/rollbars/geometry ?

Anyway, each to their own with the tire sizes i guess.
I get it that you guys dont like any new sports cars? they all have low profile tires.

Another one similar..

When a 924 looks that good on Fuchs-a-likes then stuff ride quality. Buy a Volvo if you want proper tyre profile and leather sofa comfort :D

The car is set up as recommended by EMC Motorsport and the BRSCC Porsche 924 racers, but there is a big difference between driving at the limit on track and on the road.

I suspect you are wrong, the Boxster runs on 18" wheels with 265/35 x 18 on the rear. Would it drive better on 17" possibly but it was designed for 18" wheels & mine left the factory on these sizes.
Don't forget over 10% of the club runs cars under 7 years old.
My issue is people cramming big wheels with corresponding low profile tyres onto older cars, they were never designed for it & most look pants. To actually handle better away from the circuit they generally need geo changes, as well as spring & damper rate adjustment. I'd guess 99% of what you see around have never had this. Would I stop it no, although if you lived in other countries you would be. Germany would want TUV approval for the mods.

You know, maybe I am wrong, should we all look into running 13" wheels then ? :)
Just kidding, i see your points of view and i think to some degree they are all valid.
However i still think that for road use if your taste allows you to, you can safely use lower profile tires and larger diameter rims and still retain if not enhance the sporty feel of the car. You have to know what you're doing tho.
I have been running lower profile tires for almost a decade now with success, even been on the Ring with such a setup.

But I did paint my engine yellow and powder coat my suspension too...

Interesting thread :)

As an old fart of 63 in 79 I took my TR4 down to Venice and apart from Italy the roads were fine as they were here in UK.
Recently I have holidayed around the Med and roads are fine.

Now however our roads are terrible with undulations bumps and potholes almost everywhere.
When it rains they have an added life threatening problem of deep standing water, this despite the Romans building roads with the centre higher than than the gutter modern roads sometimes are not.

One very good reason why there are so many bunches of flowers at roadsides :(

Old fashioned tyres are far better able to absorb the rough roads than rubber bands on brittle cheap alloy wheels.
Check out BMW's of about 5 to 10 years old and many have cracked rims.

I would suggest our roads are at crisis point.

Hmmmh, those modern fuch are not for me but whatever floats your boat. As previously said in this thread, glad everyone is different… although I've seen a really nice 924 with split rims on the looked superb… but I run goofy tyres with cheap OEM wheels on my car

I have to say I don't like the wheels. I think a lower profile really does suit the 924 but this car is taking it too far.

The 924 design has really grown on me over the last year and I really like these cars that clean off all the chinz and leave the clean lines of the bodyshape. I really like the way the front of the 924 sweeps underneath. It looks efficient like an early 911. I don't think the factory version will become a classic but I think the dub scene will turn the 924 into the new Mark 1 golf and highly sought after.

That said I also like the 944 shape which is why I bought one. I'm not really sold on the turbo/S2 front and prefer the older version. I think the Carrera GT is the best front though. Never really liked the rear spoiler effect either. I think the later cars look like they are trying to be something different and 'up-to-date'. I suppose they are very late 80's early 90's in style (clean, tron like). I just prefer the early 80's excess and brashness.

My two pennies worth.
