So I've learnt a lesson tonight - don't try to fix bits on the car when you should really be looking after your kids. I found the starter/alternator loom was melted, frayed and the exposed wires oxidised so striped it out to build a new one. Whilst my wife was at work and the boys seemed happy I started to build the loom but got interrupted a few times so finished it off later.
Roll on 2 days and I started to put it back together tonight but before fitting the heat shields decided to start the car. First turn of the key and sprang to life, not smoke or sparks and a higher voltage on the gauge
Turned the ignition off but the engine kept running but in a proper way, not running on. I had to pull the ht lead from the coil to stop it then spent time checking all connections which seemed fine. 2 hours of Internet searching and I found a post from a guy who did the same. Turned out I have the alternator and solenoid wires the wrong way round
Small late night alteration and it's back in business plus a lesson learnt!!
