Hi Guys

New here, but not to Porsche. I have owned a 1986 NA 944 Auto for about 14 years now.
It has been off the road more than on the road, mostly due to mixture of failures then the longest period was due to a company car coming along.

The current situation is as follows.
Done:
Full clean of engine exterior.
Complete front end re-seal - I had slight leaks from the balance shaft seals.
New gaskets for cam tower - The main o ring was causing a massive oil leak.
New pulleys and idlers - Better safe than sorry.
New belts - Old Balance belt snapped, cam belt was ok but replaced anyway.
New cabling to sensors - Heat had melted the sheathing in several places.
Flush cooling system - Suspect minor rad leak

To do:
Flush oil then change for the Mobil 1 10W-60 which sounds good.
New spark plugs.
New fuel lines - current ones are original and look very dodgy.
Drain fuel tank - currently has 1/4 tank of 3+ year old fuel.
Air and fuel filter.
After that onto brakes and suspension.
I have rebuilt one caliper on the front.
New pads and discs all around.
New flexible Brake hoses and fluid.
Transmission service.

Top mounts for struts.
Front wheel bearings - Possibly, need to double check.
Worry about oil drain plug. - It was overtightened at some point and the head rounded trying to get it off.
I am planning on draining via the turbo oil return plug on the other side (jacking slightly one side to get as much as possible out).
Some interior work.

Should keep me going for a while, but I am sure there is more..........

Hi Jamie and welcome to TIPEC forum.

I'm a 928 man but can offer advice on "generic" problem you have with rounded drain plug. Two solutions:

- use a Pela oil extractor pump (or equivalent from somewhere like Machine Mart), with the suction tube stuck down dipstick hole into sump

- or if you want to drain conventionally the rounded plug will almost certainly succumb to a bolt extractor like the ones shown here

Thanks for the welcome.

Also, thanks for the tips on the oil pump and bolt grip. I had thought about it but was unsure on the success rate. I considered drilling a hole as centrally as possible, not deep, maybe just 3-4 mm, then hammering in an oversized triplesquare/cheesehead which may provide enough torque on a long breaker bar.

I exercised that same solution on the allen head bolts on the cam tower when a couple stripped out. Needless to say I replaced them and I have a new sump plug too.

Let you know how it goes. Maybe a series of progress pics in a new thread.......

I'd forgotten it was allen head!

On same principle as the triple square idea (what's a triple square?) I would try hammering in slightly larger imperial socket or torx socket. If that fails then go for Pela pump.

I know many owners who only use Pela as far less messy.

Triple square is what the US peeps call a cheesehead or 12 point.

I tried a torx and a 12 point socket over the over the rounded head, that did not work.

Oh, and while I am catching up on posts.......... I got an Irwin Bolt Grip set. It did the job!!!!!! Yaaaaaaaaaay.

That's excellent news James - I wasn't sure how recessed the plug is, but the Irwin tools need very little to get a grip on. They have worked for me every time - much more reliable and easier to use than bolt extractors that require drilling into the head
