Hello cousin Will :)

Ha ha! I know we do... How is your S? Well I hope?

Please come up to visit, it'd be really cool to see you... Maybe we could meet half way or something??

Progress, 03.01.2014

- Visit to PH Sportscars resulted in a purchase of... A complete heater blower assembly including box, slider controls etc from a later car.... Also a 951 Rad and fans along with a few other bits, courtesy light for boot, voltmeter, clean centre console (mine has seen better days). Result. Except the rad fans are no good so it needs to go back :( Not the end of the world though.

- Front end 99% complete and fully reassembled now... More grinding, cutting, welding, bending etc but everything is tightened right up and principally it is now where we want it.

There is a "but" ... There's a Retro Rides club meet on Sunday morning (at Limes Cafe, Newark for those interested) and I really wanted to take the car for a spin up there for a proper drive as I have not driven it much since I got it. Newark from Leicester is far enough to stretch it's legs but not too far from home should disaster occur (not that it should!!).

For this reason we needed to get it back together and there is a little outstanding cosmetic work to do in there. Also we will be upgrading the rad and tidying the lights up so it's no great shakes.

Some photos!

IC trial fitting on new mounts

Doesn't look like much but it was quite a bit of work... Front end is getting there now but the list continues!

Anyway it is back together and driving well!

Finally a little video when we'd finished for the day (evening!)

More updates soon, thanks for reading! :)

I forgot to add a photo with the cross bar fitted (painted black!)

I'll upload next time

Excellent stuff man!

Got to say I love the original two tone paint on that too.

Thanks!

The car looks great in red but in many ways it is a real shame that the two tone paintwork is lost :( who knows, maybe one day I'll paint it in the original colours again, wouldn't that be interesting! :-)

I am a little confused!

Is this the same 924 GTS replica up for sale in the members for sale section? and therefore the previous part of this thread is history or is it a different car?

I was looking to buy something to replace my 944S2 which went just before Xmas and the GTS replica for sale is probably the only thing I have looked at since then that interests me.

So please put me out of my misery (maybe too much food and drink over Xmas has numbed my brain)

Hi David

Yes it is, the confusion is my fault. I was going to sell it but had a change of heart and decided to keep it I'm afraid!

I really ought to update the for sale ad!

Kind regards,

Llewelyn

Cheers David!

Sorry for the lack of replies, it's all work and no play making Llewelyn a dull boy :)

A quick update.

Since the last post everything is reassembled front end wise. We still have a bit of tidying to do which is why I haven't posted photos. I don't want anyone to consider our work shoddy! There was a car meet on Sunday I went to and needed to reassemble so the front panel has been bolted on but the fabrication is not yet finished.

The next job is actually to retrofit a 944 heater into the car. Unfortunately this does also entail enlarging the fan aperture on the bulkhead which is reasonably involved but the good news is the dash will also have to come out which means I can replace the steering column bearing sleeve as well as do a bit of a wiring tuck job under there while everything is exposed.

I do have all the components which I took from an 85 944 last weekend so I'm hoping to complete this on Saturday!

Longer term the next plan of action will be to remove the engine and repaint the engine bay (should have been done in the first place), and while it is out replace the clutch, hoses, engine mounts, cambelt etc etc. I might fit an ss header depending on cost too.

I'm also considering a repaint (although the paintwork is ok there is some crazing around the hood scoop)

I guess in essence this is turning into more of a project than first anticipated but this is out of passion not necessity as it is a tidy and good runner as is!

Some photos (the first "proper" photos!) from the meet I went to last weekend:

Cheers! I'm doing the steering sleeve and heater mod tomorrow (dash out) so that'll be interesting :)

I'll update with some progress/photos tomorrow evening....

UPDATE - 18-01-2014

Objective for the day - Install 944 heater system and steering column sleeve bearing.

First job -

Dash out:

Image

What a mess!!

Image

Really looking forward to refitting everything and cleaning it all up so I know it's perfect under there and all the wiring is as it should be!

Next step was replacing the steering bearing, not a simple job - It was absolutely ruined and quite difficult to extract... Definitely worth it though!

Old:

Comparison:

Image

Shiny new part fitted!

Image

This is where the fun starts :)

Ok so as mentioned above the early 944 heaters are a bit rubbish and I don't like the contact sliders. I prefer the knob for fan speed. Also the actual blower motor is a better design and more powerful so I decided to retrofit a 944 heater into the car. Unfortunately this means moving the blower aperture forward by about 20mm which is not a particularly fun job. Also the hoses for the heater matrix require a little bit of jiggery-pokery as does the heater valve. In addition there is some wiring modifications needed and the 944 centre cluster needs to be replaced because the design is slightly different.

I hope it's worth it!!

Anyway this is a long job and after a long day it still wasn't finished but we did make some good progress:

New heater to be fitted:

Image

Cleaned up:

Image

Some centre consoles, which I will be using all the best bits from to make the nicest centre console I can...

Image

What do we think, carpeted sides or plain plastic????

Original aperture:

Trial fitting:

Image

A big hole (!!):

More trial fitting:

Some fabrication:

More trial fitting:

Image

Some welding:

Image

Some tidying:

Image

Battery died at this point so I didn't take any more photos but we seam sealed the aperture and put it in primer.

The whole bulkhead area is going to be repainted when we've finished messing around under there but for the time being the work has been zinc primered and given a quick coat of satin black for now. Richard painted it all red but obviously just gave it a quick lick over at the time and it hasn't lasted so the whole engine bay will eventually be properly prepped and repainted when the engine comes out.

Still to do:

- Finish off the pipe work
- Swap over the hot water valve
- Refit the dash

... I should be good to go after this point! I'm really looking forward to trying out the new steering bearing, I have a feeling it will transform the feel of the car!

Thanks for reading!

To be honest, it was!!! Took around 8 hours total labour if you don't count breaks, cups of tea and general sidetracking :)

Not sure that Id have bothered. Both 924 types or heating a pretty rubbish and whilst the knob type may be a little better, it only really worked properly in the series two 944.
