Afternoon Gents,

Just completed a 1000 miles in my '86 944, just on normal fuel. Economy has varied from 18-27mpg to the tank. Just stuck a tank of optimax in it to see what sort of difference it makes.

What does everyone else use in their cars?

Olly

I have to use super with my set up so it's shell v power all the way as it's higher ron than the other similar priced alternatives.

The 2.5 block is designed to run on a MINIMUM of 98RON. I've used Tesco 99 for the last 5000 miles and it does seem to like it.

Porsche issued a general comment for the use of fuel with ethanol substitutes and said that our cars should run a MAX of 5%.

At present Tesco 99 is at 5% (like most others, inc super unleadeds) so I'll keep on using it. However if it shoots up to 10% as expect it will in time I'll ditch it for something else.

+1
Been using Shell V Power for the last 7 years as recommended by previous owner (Simon Peckham) who rebuilt the Blueprint Engine.
Getting around 25mpg

Its actually 95RON minimum for the Turbo Ben. That said Id be very surprised if 97RON didnt show an improvement in economy and you cant be too careful with a turbocharged car.

and unfortunately Tesco 99 in addition to its 5% ethanol also contains 3% methanol which has a very similar detrimental effect on certain engine components to ethanol.

http://www.tescopfs.com/momentum99/specifications

so with a total alcohol content of 8% it's a bit above Porsche's recommendations.

Well I f***ed that right up then, didn't I?!

Please ignore my comments above, I just assumed the 2.5 would run on the same go-go juice.

As for the Tesco 5+3, that's me told, thanks. They don't make a big song and dance about it do they...

Does anyone have a definitive list of 98RON+ fuels that have a max of 5% eco shite added?

It is funny you say that Simon. On my car, it returns better MPG to the point where it actually is cheaper to run the car on V-Power :).

The only other time I have seen this with a car I have owned is on a 2006 VW Passat 1.9 TDI with the PD engine. On that, V-Power Diesel not only improved its performance, but also its MPG by quite a way (to the point where it almost usurped a Renault Kangoo 1.5 DCI I was driving prior to it). People said at the time I should save my cash, but the results on paper seemed to suggest I was! Oddly enough, VW say that Bio Diesel and PD engines are not a great combo, to the point where the fuel filter changes are dramatically shortened from 30k to 7k!

Sorry, old habits, yes, I stuck v-power in and it seems a lot smoother (esp on the overrun for some reason). I can't comment on mpg yet as this tank is doing big motorway runs, so the results will be skewed anyway.

Hoping for over 400 to this tank!

Shell always made a point about their Optimax and then V-Power fuels being refined with a higher octane rating, as opposed to being cheap 95RON boosted with alchohol.

V-Power goes off though so you cant sit on it and neither can the petrol station.

Not a problem for me, @ 250 miles per week it doesn't last long!

With normal driving 400 miles to a tank should be doable :).

In my Turbo when I was being fairly heavy handed for around 100 miles of the tank it did 360 miles until the reserve light came on :). Recently when it has done 360 it has not been close to hitting the reserve :).
