Just seems weird that the are slotted - and that the plastic trim behind is 'shaped'?
I wondered whether it had something to do with an optional luggage net (perhaps)

I think the slot is there so you can turn it through 90 degrees and then pull the plug out of the fixing and then release the trim if you want to remove it. They should then push home and you turn back to fix, that's if I recall correctly from doing it in my 996.

Oil mate, it's a special bag with porsche on it to take a litre bottle
996 turbo x50, silicone pipes, billet diverter valves, fabspeed headers and maxflo system.

...and it also has a fold up funnel and disposable gloves inside. I didn't dare look how much mine cost as part of the last OPC service.

I use them to hold up full shopping bags. There are similar ones in the boot of my BMW.
