I've just swapped my Caterham 7 for a 966 and finding my way round. The front tyres are wearing a bit unevenly, the inside more worn that the outer edge, is this normal?, is it toe in/out? is it tracking? is it something else? can the local kwick/HiQ/ATS etc sort it? Also is there any way to prevent the rather silly grin on my face? Ian PS In the headlight assembly there is a bit of water in the small triangular section, is there an easy way to solve this? |

in order; tyre depot probably OK for tracking (i.e.toe), but the car will benefit from a full alignment - they cannot do this. Somewhere like Centre Gravity nr Coventry excel at this No...sorry.....can't help with second item....you could buy a GT3...that will make the grin even wider ! The triangular section (I'm assuming you have a pre-facelift 3.4, and don't have xenons / washers) is just a blanking pate that can be renewed at low cost if it bothers you part numbers: Left 996 631 045 00 Right 996 631 046 00 David |

Hi Welcome to the forum I think yor tyre wear could be toe or camber issues or both. Don't leave it to a non specialist to sort out. Too many horror stories, a few of which have been on here. OPC's and some independants can set up for you at a reasonable cost, that would probably be to factory settings. However, if you want it sorted in detail and by a specilaist who does nothing else for a living, then spend the extra at Centergravity. I use Centergravity as do a number of others. Top Job, more expensive but you get what you want and what you pay for. The grin, yes you could go for something with more grunt but a good set up can also give you lots more for a lot less money. Thanks for all the comments and welcome, I've arranged to get the car properly sorted, seems a good plan. I've not had the Porsche long but my initial reactions in comparison with the Caterham 7 are as follows... The 911 is a much bigger and heavier car, the Caterham with a 10" steering wheel and no power assistance is outstandingly agile and with little space between yourself and the cockpit, you are [as on a motorbike] very much part of the vehicle. The 911 is much more substantial, refined with more than sufficient performance for the road. Extremely comfortable [and waterproof] and with the roof dropped by pressing a button! fresh air motoring is so easy. The Porsche is a 'pussycat' round town, docile, light and controlable but readily transforms with a few revs. I'll be taking it on a trackday [soon I hope] which will give me a better chance to explore it's potential. One aspect of the 911 I hadn't fully concidered was other peoples attitude. The Caterham certainly turned heads and attracted interest in any French or Italian town or ville and older women in this country seem nostalgically attracted [to the car not the driver] but there is sometimes [obviously in retrospect] an anti 'rich ba*****d' attitude to the 911.
