Post subject:  Engine Coolant Question...

Hi all. It looks like my engine coolant could do with some topping up. I went to Halford's to look for the correct coolant to match my 996. I was told that there are two types of coolant - Methanol and Ethalene (One being blue in colour, and the other, pink). I told the dude that the collant already in my car is yellow, which stumped him.

Needless to say, not wanting to risk putting the wrong stuff in, I left without any coolant... but I now need to top up my levels.

So I thought I'd ask you experts here... what is this yellow coolant, and where can I get it from? Any tips from you guys out there in terms of how you top up your engine coolant?

Thanks in advance.

If it's only a little top up you can use water till you get some coolant.
It is NOT recommended to mix coolants as there can be a reaction that attacks rubber seals.
It is designed to be long life coolant and should be reddish in colour.
Go to a car parts supplier for some or ask your service garage to get some in for you
to match the Porsche spec.

Hope this helps

Mine is green. (Unipart ethylene glycol) If you've never done it I would dump the lot. Flush & refill. It's recommended you do this every 5 years anyway as the original coolant degrades. Just be careful to bleed it right. Not having a 911 I can't help you there.

Hi :)

Technical answer....there are 2 types....

Type 1 = ethylene glycol based...BEST TYPE ...MIX 50/50 WITH WATER and will protect to over 30 degrees below and also protect all ally parts in your engine......keep it at 50/50 ALL YEAR ROUND...

Type 2 = Methanol based.....utter crap , but cheap...the reason its crap is that methanol EVAPORATES when warm......think about where it goes lol...NEVER use it...

READ labels it will say WHICH its based on....but the proper stuff will be more expensive anyway...

Colour does NOT matter....they can be mixed as long as correct type...

All the best Brett :)
