Ok, first decent run of the year :bounce:
just got back from Gaydon, was a reasonably quick run back with no traffic hurrah :D

As I turned off the last bit of dual carriageway to come into my village I noticed a whining noise going up and down with rpm as opposed to road speed. Had bit of a investigate and poke round and it sounds like it's coming from the alternator / water pump area, belt looks ok, according to the dash, temp, charging and pressure all looked ok. Just gone back and had another look now everything has cooled down and no whining, had another quick blast and got everything warmed up again and whine has returned.
Any best guesses??

Belt tensioner? Best get someone to look at it. Might just need oiled, but might stop and not tension the belt. If it's the alternator, a refurbished unit is a lot cheaper than a new one. :D

Thanks Lee, didn't think about the tensioner, will bite the bullet and get our local OPC to have a look :?

It does sound like something with a bearing in it, if it's quiet when cold.

Martin, pop the belt off, it is spring loaded & have a spin of the various bits & a listen. Idler or alternator could be possibles. Maybe water pump if it hasn't been done. They seem to have a limited life from my experience last year! Does sound to me like a drying bearing when something gets warm.

I used to have to give a little squirt of 'belt life' onto the belt following a wet drive or not used for a while..
Belt used to go dry and squeak/whine..

Ok quick update....
Belt tensioner and guides all noisy, so being changed this week hopefully that's that one sorted :)
Went to local tyre house to get geometry checked and discovered both front drop links buggered so that might get rid of the annoying knocking noise, so that's on for this week as well, nice chaps are going to do a pre mot as well
Fingers crossed :?

Looks like all diagnosis wrong

Drop links definitely buggered as are track rod ends and now found steering rack peeing oil, so latest diagnosis whining coming from power steering pump as it had no bleeding oil
So back in garage next week to be finished off, getting a rack at a sensible price was like rocking horse pooh :? Found recon one which is being delivered Tuesday
Good news tho, nothing else that should stop an mot :drunken:
These guys at A2 tyres in Sittingbourne have been brilliant if your are within reach and need tyres, suspension, geo checks etc etc try em out they have been sensible, honest and not ripped me off on price :bounce:
