My 996 gen 1 has been parked for two weeks outside. I had disconnected the battery and put it on trickle charge as the car as a tendency to flatten batteries

On re-connection the central locking 'chatters' occasionally the drivers window drops an inch and then goes back up.

Needless to say the key fob or actually using the key in the lock does nothing and, while I can turn on the ignition, it won't start and the roof operating light is on

Sounds expensive, doesn't it?

I had an issue where the car would unlock itself every time I locked it. it was traced to the drivers door lock, which was about £150 from OPC. It sounds like it could be damp? the alarm module is under the passenger seat, could it be damp? The problem with the door is, taking the panel off means you need to burst the water tight membrane to check/change it.

Maybe a local Indy could pop round with a durametric to plug in and let you know what's going on?

Yes. A little bit more investigating and I have discovered that It's more than damp under the passenger seat. It really needs some gravel and ornaments before I put some fish in!

I assume the alarm module will be toast. I get a second hand one does it need to be on the car to have it re coded?

Aye, needs to be on, powered up and have a computer ready to re-code it or it won't move. I'm not sure of a second hand one? OPC had to give my chassis number to get a new one and I got a new set of alarm module numbers for reprogramming. Needs someone with more experience than me to explain what you can do. Maybe PM JMG?

So, I have removed, cleaned and replaced to alarm module from under the passenger seat.

Now when I connect the battery there is no central locking chatter but nothing works.

No remote, ignition just lights all the warning lights and traction control is switched off.

If I get an alarm module with a fob, I assumed I can make up a key that has my blade and RFID (?) but the new sender. Or is that too simplistic?

I see some people advertising the set to include an engine ECU - do I need a set?

There are many and varied theory's on the interweb but I think I will take the advice of this forum as it seems eminently more sensible !

You must be jinxed Pal, what is it with you and getting into cars?

I am sure I read that you can reset the Central locking by a series of clicks on the fob. It might be in the handbook?

Can you make the alarm go off? That might help it reset.

The alarm immobiliser is useless. I can find replacements from several breakers who want to sell me a DME, immobiliser & a key fob. They match my part numbers but are from different models ie 3.2 Boxster or a C4 tip

Questions are :-

Will this be ok ?

Do I need to change both?

Thanks all advise is gratefully received

I seem to recall a procedure for disconnecting the battery, something like turning the ignition on before disconnecting the battery, am I correct ?
