Based in Shropshire

Was chairman of the local Quattro owners club until 8 years ago
Owned 5 different ur's - Miss the thrill

Had a number of BMW 3 series verts (ok) at present have a Final edition of the CLK Mercedes 2.3 Compressor (Very nice)

Could some one describe the different 911 models in the 966 and 967 ranges

Realise the difference between Cabrio and Coupe (and even 4 wheels drive)!!

but need to know about S and standard

Also wide bodied - when did this come in

Is there anything in particular to watch for when buying

Notice quite a few over 100k have a new gearbox fitted is this a usual problem

There is a lot of information to process if you're undecided which model/budget fits you ( I had typed your requirements there, but it comes down to personal taste).

The 911 996 was the first water cooled flat 6 Porsche made and had a face lift in 2002. The most desirable model was the C4S which is wide bodied and 4 wheel drive. Basically in the 996 range I think all C2 were narrow bodied and C4 were wide bodied?

The 911 997 was an evolution of the 996 and the engine was changed to a new model. Models and bodies get complicated in this range.

Hi Richard

Welcome to the forum :)

I could be wrong (without checking) but I think the 996 C4 is narrow bodied.
The 4S is the same as a Turbo with no Turbo.

997 the S has a power increase over standard C.

Both suffer from engine failures and a bore inspection when you have found the right car is worth the expense.

The other big expense are radiators and condensers. They gather crud underneath from the front vents and that rots them out if not regularly cleaned.

You should budget £2k a year running costs and I guess the all important question is are you buying a daily driver or a hobby car?
996's are great buys the 997's will continue to depreciate.

There are buying guides for the 996 and 997 at £10 each well worth the read.

I would pop along to your local meeting and get a feel for the different models.

Forgotten all about this post
Bought a very nice 996 C4 and ran it for 3 years until I panicked and swapped it for a BMW VERT
Well if that doesn't throw me out of the club nothing will

Was a disaster although spec wise it had every :D thing I wanted JUst didn't like the car

Bought a nice 2003 986 Tip Boxster liked it so much upgraded it to 997 Manual Boxster

Rest is history now running the new Region Shropshire and Mid Wales
