Hi All,
New member here, i have a 2002 996 Carrera 4 Cab. & just embarking on looking for new tyres & wondered if anyone could assist in commenting on the type im thinking of.

i'm thinking of using Falken FK453 tyres on my standard 18 inch Porsche rims sized as : : front 8J with 50 offset
: rear 10J with 65 offset

However whilst they can supply the bang on correct size front tyre's @ 225 / 40 / 18, the rear's which should be 285 / 30 / 18 are only available in 295 / 30 / 18 & 265 / 30 / 18, or 285 / 35 / 18

I would really like some advice regarding the possibility of any of the three rear sizes i.e will the larger 295 go on the rims & if so will they rub anywhere ? Or will the 265 width not give as good grip & lastly would the 285 / 35 just be wrong because of the added 5mm of profile.

Any help wouldbe greatly appreciated

regards
Mace

Hi

I use this calculator to check diameters and speedo reading differences:

http://www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/visual ... calculator

I used the 285 width on my 02 996 not sure on the profile but it was the standard.

I don't think you'll get any rubbing as the overall width of 295 is 10 mm wider than the 285 i.e 5 mm each side of the wheel and there is masses of clearance on the 996 rear wheel arch.

265 tyres are not approved for the 996 facelift and I think they'd be a bit skinny.

I've no experience of Falken but believe they work well, I wouldn't recommend Pirelli Rosso due to poor wear but liked the Michelin.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the reply, I used the calculator & it tells me that the max width i can use on the standard 10'' rims is 285mm, so i guess i can't use the 295's unless anyone else can advise to the contrary

265 is the standard on 10" rims.

I have 295 on 11" rims

Hi :)

I use 996 wheels on my 928 for my Nitrous...

I have 7.5 on the front and 10 on the back ....

I use Falken 453s 225/40/18 (front) and 275/35/18 (rear)

They fit and work perfectly...

Great in the dry and good in the wet :)

All the best Brett :)

Thanks to all for replies, Brett does this mean that i'm OK to use the 35 profile on the rears, without causing any adverse problems as the standard is 30. I thought if you increased the profile size it may alter your speedo settings ? or is very slight by increasing by just 5mm

regards
Paul

That link I gave earlier tells you the speedo readings for each size at various intervals as a direct comparison, you can then make your mind up if that's acceptable to you or not.

Hi Paul :)

I increased my wheel size from 7 inch to 10 inch AND oversized my tyres...deliberately for my Top speed runs (my 208.1 mph record)

The difference between 30 and 35 profile are neglible...maybe a 1 mph increase on your speedo reading, and as all speedos are set to underead, its very slighty to your advantage (being more accurate)

All the best Brett :)

Mace,
just seen this post & can confirm 295/30s will fit 10" rims on the 996 without problems.
I've had them on the back of my 40th Anniversary model for the last 4 yrs - initially with Pirelli Pzero Corsa & now with continental's,
They may not be recommended - but they work well. No rubbing issues, no Tyre sidewall problems or strange wear issues that you might expect if the Tyre is "squeezed" onto a too narrow rim.
I do a few small scale track days every year & you can push the Tyres very hard without concerns

Chaps,
Really appreciate your replies, now i know that its possible to fit 295's to 10 inch wheels, i may well go for that size on the rears & keep the front end standard @ 225/40/18

Also as Brett has already used the fairly new Falken 453's & i have seen them advertised by Falken using a 911 GT3, i dont think the power of my 996 & my reasonably relaxed style of driving should give too many problems. Once again thanks to all who offered their experience / opinion, ive probably got a few months before i actually have new tyres, so anyone else please still feel free to post

regards
Mace

The Falken's will be fine. Brilliant for the money. Used the previous 452's on a 986s with good results.

Hi.. Not to throw the Cat amongst the Pigeons but.. Is insurance/warranty invalid if the tyres aren't on the Porsche Approved list?

http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesa ... downloads/

I've just got all Four Corners re-shoed with Michelin Pilot Sports because I was under this impression? Not that I mind, they're great tyres..

Hi :)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that is total BULLSHIT put out by Porsche AND certain tyre companies, and an internet myth...

ALL tyres are made to the same specifications and have NO EFFECT ON INSURANCE AT ALL !!!!!

All the best Brett :)
