When not using the car so much during this time of year I connect a condition charger to maintain the battery in tip top condition to ensure that on those bright days the car will start and you don't miss the opportunity.

This was a must for the 964 I had previously, especially if the car was idle for two weeks or more, and have really just carried this over to the 997.

What I've found with the 997 is after a few days on the condition charger the key fob does not work and I have to open the door by turning the key in the door lock, after which it will work off the remote again.

Am I doing something wrong? Or do I need a specific condition charger?

The alarm goes into sleep mode after 7 days, this is normal, the fob does not work and you have to use the key.

996 is the same. 5 days without use, I think it is?

just lift the door handle and it awakens the system no key needed

Thanks for the replies , I'll try it out in a few days providing the weather doesn't pick up.

I have a 996 - there seem to be so many battery trickle chargers / maintainers out there I am confused. The car is in a garage close to a power supply - can anyone give me a recommendation on which unit to buy as the car is regularly left for up to 2 weeks during winter. Thanks

Correct as stated, just lift the door handle and the remote control works.

I got one of these for Christmas. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like it will resolve the problem

I purchased a Carcoon Automatic Battery Maintainer & Charger (& Regulated DC Power supply for DC ventilation fans) in Feb 2005 as I was having problems starting my 2.7 944 if it hadn't been out for a couple of weeks in the winter!
I have used it since then on 2 subsequent 944's an S2 Cab and my current 944 Turbo.
It has been an absolute godsend . It is supplied with a set of leads with a quickly detachable plug and a set of leads with plain crock clips. I have had no problems with the unit or any problems starting the cars, wouldn't be without one now and would certainly recommend this product.

This doesn't work for my 996.

If your garage has a power supply I'd go for a mains unit, I've had mine for around 10yrs, it a Banner unit, can't fault it other than it was about £30.

All the more reason to buy a 997 then

I'm going to buy one of these, and make a few modifications so I have a (fused) permanent live additional socket accessible from inside the car. In the future, this will double up as a power supply for a car-pc mp3 player. I should probably make it switch-able as well.

I use an accumate one. I'll leave stuff plugged in for weeks if necessary, over the winter usually.
No problems so far. I connect direct to the battery but you can use the (supplied) cigarette lighter connector too.
Plenty of TVRs I've seen have the unit attached to the car so you just connect to the mains without needing to open the bonnet, doors etc.

Worked out you just need to give the key a quarter turn in the drivers door lock to start the key fob working again.
