Looking for information about 996 and 997 front uprights
Does anyone know if there is a difference in diameter of the front dampers 996-997 ive got a set of 997 3.8S front uprights/hubs and brakes, wondering if the 996 front shocks fit in the uprights or if they are a different diameter?

I don't think they will.
I was offered a set of unused shocks for my 996.2 C2, I checked the part numbers with a couple of suppliers and Eibach. They turned out to be 997 shocks which apparently are different and won't fit a 996.
