Hi,

I'd really like to get the Altenator Fan off my 964, it is crying out to be cleaned and painted.

I've taken all the V belt pulleys off but the fan itself doesn't want to move.

Before I resort to using a puller, am I going to trash the bearings? I dont want to have to replace them or ake the whole altenator out. It's not clear from the parts diagrams which bits should easily seperate from each other.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Iain

Hi, the fan will come off with a puller and the bearing will stay on the alternator shaft in the hub. Not sure how easy it is to pull off with the alternator still in position as i did mine on the 964 when the alternator was off for repair. Pulling the fan off wont harm the bearing. Tried to get mine powder coated at the wheel specialist but they wouldnt touch it , so painted it myself with enamel spray paint from halfords.

Thanks,

I ended up taking the alternator out completly, even when you get the fan off the end of the shaft you can't get it out of the car, it wont fit between the end of the shaft and the bodywork.

All cleaned up now, on the bench ready for paint....

Cheers,
Iain

I managed to get mine powder coated. It looked great afterwards. Glad you got it off in the end

Painted it and back in the car. Just the pulleys and belts to go back...

Iain, that is a very yellow fan, and it looks good! I must have been on my travels when you first posted up this thread, it is interesting, and something I would like to do on the 993 :thumbleft: :thumbleft:

It's well worth it, even if you don't opt for yellow, really lifts the whole look of the engine bay.

Cheers,
Iain
