Hi, If as you say the odometer has stopped working yet your speedometer still works the probable cause lies in one of the faults described. The VDO odometer used in the 911's has two distinct flaws in it's design. One of the problems is that some of the internal parts are made of plastic and over time, or distance as the case may be, can stick and destroy themselves. The other issue is the pot-metal gear that is pressed onto the main odometer shaft, after years of usage, this often comes loose on the shaft refusing to turn the odometer. They can be repaired but the parts needed to do so are not readily available off the shelf, but with a little effort can be found. There are instrument repair shops that will undertake the repair for you. If you plan on having a go at the repair as opposed to purchasing a second hand or new instrument let me know and I'll PDF some instructions to you. |

Hi Allan, Thanks for that. I think a repair may be beyond me so, if I can stop driving the car for a minute, I'll try and get hold of a specialist. Any ideas ? |

Rod, I've used the specialist out of the classifieds in Practical Classics a few times and found them to be OK. Talk to them before hand to establish if they understand what your problem is, but most instruments even from different manufacturers are very similar. Let us know how you get on. Allan. |
