so all quiet on the SC front then
, no seriously a lot of work there, glad its all been worth it, should be good for a while now ....... or is there more planned ?

As some of you may remember our Sc was plagued by running problems, well finally enough was enough. It took around 4 months but I have (with the help of Jon Mitchell and the boys and the incrediby kind use of their tools, ramps, space, and expertise) : checked and found to be satisfactory if not better than satisfactory: the leak down and compression, Then removed all the intake bits bead blasted anything that didnt move. We replaced all the rubber boots , gaskets etc when it went back together,. the old boots were ruined and allsorts of unmetered air was getting in. replaced: filter accumulator injectors metering head fuel pump obviously reset the mixture now without all the unmetered air. CIS made sure all vacuum pipes are sound AND run to the right place (nightmare) RE wired the fusebox/relay board in the engine compartment. fettled: Distributor, now a lot smoother in operation advances well, timing reset to spot on. new cap, arm, leads, plugs. Set the rocker/valve gaps, using the backside method, this is a dam sight easier than using the bent tool under the elephant foot method, honest. It just means removing the engine tinware. otherwise it is just cam covers off as per the ordinary method. whilst the cam covers were off they were bead blasted as well fitted new red heater hose from the blower to the h/e's, this is 60mm(?) so rather than pay the inflated prices from Porsche and associated suppliers I went to a caravan place, bought 3mtrs of the hose they use for caravan heaters and sprayed it a nice shiney red. I still need a new/sh warm up reg and also a thermo time valve, the vacuum part not the switch that goes into the left hand timing cover(replaced that as well already) any other metal bits that came off were bead blasted and protected or satin blacked and protected depending on their origional colour. new S/H but freshly rebuilt and unused since rebuild later version oil cooler 915 gearbox, was so nice when it went in it sounded like a straight cut box, is now becoming looser with some use. Car now runs like a dream, bit finnicky when cold but am hoping a sorted WUR will sort that out. there may be some things I have forgotten to add to this list Gordon |

i have just resprung the flapper boxes and have working heating, whilst there i have sorted the fog light wiring !!!!!!!! yup just like the forth road bridge !!!!!!! only faster |

that heating has been bugging me for ages, found out that I can get the back of the car on ramps on the front garden so I got underneath and discovered that 2 new return springs was all that was needed to make the boxes open properly so the cabin isnt roasting hot at all times. Whilst under there I noticed that the fog light wiring was awful so I re loomed it, did I add earlier that Jon being the perfectionist he is insited on re looming and taping the wires tidily in the engine bay whilst we were doing the other bits? I have to say aside from all the technical bits Jon let me learn from him the best thng was patience and a methodical approach to a problem, I am soooo glad I got the hang of that. ohh and the bead blaster that was great, i love the way the glove elements self inflate funny as F*** laughed every time they did it, and the backside method of doing the valve clearances was a neat trick to learn to do as well. |

Great stuff Gorden. Good to get on top of the job. Can't wait to get mine in but no room in the garage until after Christmas. A similar list of niggles to sort out on mine.

today I got cosmetic, deleted the rear wiper, it has been doing my head in for far toooooo long , ruins the line of the rear of the car, even better the blank from a bike handle bar fits the hole !! found out why the rear defrost wasnt working, fuse holder was grimy (sc's have those continental fuses remember) so out with the wire brush and hey presto!!! thats the kind of thing you only notice in the winter! |
