Got in my 1983 911 SC this moring and off I went as normal, only thing is the rev counter is all the place, seems steady at idle but when I pull away it seems to go anywhere between 0 and 5000, any ideas why? |

First simple thing you can do is check your battery connections are tight Does the needle change as you drive? Is it stuck at, say, 4000rpm? What's it like at idle? |

Hi, it seems fine on idle, stays nice and steady. When I drive it just goes any where it wants, jumps all over the place really. |

Just check the +ve terminal's clean and screwed on tightly (not just plopped on, like I once did). More than that, and I'm probably not qualified enough to say - but sounds like gauge, sender, alternator or something (not cheap) like that ![]() But have you just replaced the battery? Has the car been left standing for some time? Is the car new to you? (What's the history of the situation?) |

The car has been used the past 3 weeks more then ever, been my only car so it's doing the school run (in the rain), the rev counter was fine last week when it went for it's MOT, failed that but the following day the rev counter was playing up, thought it might have been the sender but don't know where to look for that! |

check everything to do with dizzy caps, plug wires etc, run it at night in the dark, see what you can see sparking.... chances are you have a dodgy lead / coil. |

Got it checked out today, apparently it's the regulator, so where is a good place to get a new one? |
