Saw a 97 C2S with 87k and £55k in black just advertised hadn't even had it long enough for pictures in the ad, but as it was at my local Junction 17 I popped along to see it. Bugger me if it hadn't sold the day it was advertised. Salesman said a bloke came down from London and paid the price. I cant afford these inflated prices, as they're high now I can't see them going up much more?

That's interesting I Hve a 964 and was thinking of changing it, not sure what they're fetching . 1991 Guards Red with 76k miles . Anyone have an idea?

Yes I can concur with that - 993 certainly is the car of the moment. I did predict it would be back in 2003 when my brother and I bought a 993 C4S manual with 46,000 miles for £27k (the trouble was we didn't quite keep it long enough, sold it 3 years too soon) - kept it meticulously for 10 years - sold it in 2012 for £34k with 52,000 miles which seemed fair at the time.

I saw virtually the same car yesterday come on the market with 58,000 miles (which is about what ours would have on the clock by now if we'd have kept it), for £81k - so that is a £50k price hike in 3 years! nice if you still have one. It was a great car, but not that great - it only used to return 14mpg on Super U/L (which was expensive back then compared to today) and used to tear through rear tyres in no time. In my experience, and it was more a GT than a sport car in my book (far too big and heavy, but once you got it upto speed I guess it was pretty impressive for such a large car. Since then I have returned tot he world of Lotus and Caterham and hadn't looked back again until recently when I started thinking it would be nice to add a modestly priced Porsche to the collection again).

Bitter about whats happened to my old 993 since I sold it? yes probably a bit, but I've been there and done that, and would be too afraid to to enjoy a spirited drive it in these days due to potential cost of repair. I think everyone would like 993 tucked away in the corner of the garage as it was nice to look and blue chip investment these days. If I was buying one again it would be a 60,000 mile, C2 manual, no sunroof, black interior - but that's what everyone would like to secure for sensible money, but its not going to happen for now, if ever again.

For me, I won't buy air cooled 911 again at the top of the market - maybe if there was another crash and prices tumbled would probably look for a 964 C2 coupe manual (and only with fuel prices where they are at the moment - which I also think is a major factor in the classic car and air-cooled car boom at the moment)

For now, I am instead looking to experience a 968 next as that is the missing link in my Porsche driving experience and would suit me a lot better. If I can't find a good manual example I will probably look at the 996 gen2 C2 manual cars instead to scratch that itch once again - as they are by far the best value 911 out there these days.

Happy hunting, and yes 993s are flying out of the showroom presently, and it has always had the hallmark of a desirable classic, right back to the day in '91 Tony Hatter penned it - great piece of design back then given the constraints of the legacy floor pan at the time. Even starting from a clean sheet Porsche didn't quite get 996 gen1 right aesthetically in comparison. They are all great cars though, and for me its more about getting back behind the wheel without breaking the bank, and that certainly rules the 993 out at the moment!

I saw that car when it was being prepped for sale- I thought it looked fantastic in black....
Considering its provenance it was worth much more than 55 grand even back then
so it’s no surprise it sold the same day.

Firstly, if it’s the car I’m thinking -it had an ‘AFN’ private registration plate- the owner who traded it in at Junction 17 for an Aston Martin DB9 had purchased it direct from AFN Porsche as their ex demo car .....ie: a one owner 993s from 1997 !
Surely it must have been one of the only twenty year old 993’s around 1 owner from new?
Basically Junction 17 are not Porsche specialists and they could have shifted that car for about 15 grand more had they known it’s rarity.....apparently their phone never stopped ringing....Also I’m sure the long term owner could have got thousands more for the car had he done some homework- you assume in the age of the internet everyone does some research and know the score ?!
I know we are biased here at TIPEC but why on earth would anyone trade in a beautiful rare 993S having kept it since the 1990’s only to replace it with a high mileage rust prone DB9 ? Nowt queer as folk.....
