I have a 1987 Carrera Cabriolet G50 (only 50,000 miles from new) and it's developed a problem with the starter.

Sometimes, it starts normally but usually when I turn the key to start it, it clicks and the starter does not turn.

When I try again, the same thing will happen perhaps 5, 10, 20 or even 30 times and then suddenly the engine spins perfectly and it starts instantly.

If the starter is kaput, can anyone recommend an independent specialist in or near Cheshire to replace it?

Obviously, I want someone competent who charges a lot less than a main dealer (don't we all?) 8)

Good chance its the starter as these do give problems, has the car got an immobiliser as this can also cause problems, I have also heard of the ignition swich itself giving problems now as these cars are 25+ years old now

Yes, it has a Clifford system.

The plot thickens.

With all my 3.2 Carreras and 3.0 SC's I fitted a starter relay kit, increases the voltage to the solenoid and helps it engage cleanly as well as protecting the switch from the additional load which causes it to go belly up eventually. Used to be a common mod in the 80's and 90's, but lots of these kits get removed by specialists who don't quite get it.

With the starter I have also fitted a few gear reduction starters to SC's and 3.2's, they really do increase the starting rpm and worth the money.

For a specialist near you, I would call Hartech.
