993 Rear Chassis Leg Corrosion - info required

Post by mwcarrera »

Hi, can anyone tell me about 993 rear chassis leg corrosion. I have been made aware of an area which may be a 993 weak point for rust to set in. Cannot be seen until the rear PU and heat shields are removed?? Any information on this would be appreciated. Martin

Are you talking about rear pu support brackets behind heat shield? if so they are replaceable. The 993 is not too bad for rot, bottom corners of screen, and below rear quarter lights are worst places.

Yes thanks for response. I believe the rot may set in on the actual chassis rails inwards of the bumper support. I know this has not been widely reported but my information is that there is an area which was not treated with anti-corrosion coating and is a trap for water and, especially with the heat of the exhaust, corrosion can start here!
Apparently body shops know this area all too well?? Martin

Have dug a bit deaper and found the pictures which go with the article in my previous post.

If you are ready for this then look at http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/9 ... assis.html

I will be inspecting my 993 over the winter and hope to report my findings as soon as possible. Martin

Inspected the O/S chassis leg on my 106K miler and found significant rusting under rear bracket. No holes as yet but quite heavy rust scale which when removed would not have taken much more to make a 15mm or so hole at rear of chassis leg. This time round I treated the rust and refinshed the leg and bracket before re-assembling with a good coat of Waxoyl.
Perhaps not something that all 993 owners should worry about but a definate area that should be inspected when having other work carried out such as rear silencer boxes or anything requiring the rear bumper to be removed. I know of at least one 75k miler that is having welding repairs undertaken this winter.

Hope this cautionary note is useful to other owners, Martin

Sorry to GraveDig this one, but I spoke to a chap last night in Twickenham [collected some Thules for my 993] and he mentioned this as being a hidden timebomb..!

I replaced the Cat on my 993 with a Hayward & Scott X Pipe at the weekend, and noticed that the Head Shielding needs replacing, which will require the Rear Bumper off [how do I do this?] so I'll post photos and my findings when that happens..!

Has anyone on here got photos of their 993's RCLs..?

I fear this is more common than some consider it to be - it is totally hidden (until you uncover it). I read a report about this about 6 years ago and took the opportunity to pull the support panels off the rear chassis legs while I was doing some other works on the car....and ended up with more work! Had to have sections cut out and new steel welded in. I'm sure I took photos but I can't find them.
I can't think that there will be many 993s out there (that have spent the last 20 years or more in the UK climate) that won't show some rust trauma in that area. Definitely worth a look if you haven't already.

Yes, sadly you are correct there have been a number of cars where there has been an issue, I had not come across it earlier, it is well documented on the net, and if I was pulling off the rear PU I would certainly have a look. Again all the procedures, pics are on the net, the most common area is of course on the near side of the vehicle.
