Hello all
(First post on this site)
I have owned my 964 for 6 years now and have been very proud of the fact that I have never had an oil leak in all of those years
The car has covered 70,000 mls + and has just started to leave drips on the floor and smells of burnt oil when fired up after its been standing for a day
The car is a 1991 registered model with an L code suggesting 1990 so I suppose it has no head gaskets installed , I am aware of the fitting of the gaskets as a recall and presumed that after this mileage that it would have leaked before now if it had not been done?
I will have to remove the undertray to see where its coming from
The car has recently been serviced and it was overfilled with oil by about 1.5 to 2 litres which was drained off after about 30 mls
The question is does anybody think that the head seepage has reared its ugly head after all of these miles or does the engine reach a safe milage and become proven
Regards
John F

Hi John,
My Brothers 1990 964 had a slight leak that we found came from a rear oil cooler pipe. The pipe was located by the drivers side rear wheel arch. This was not a "bad leak" (if there is any such thing), but would leave one tiny spot of oil on the ground. It appeared most of the oil was caught, or blown back, in the undertray.
It may just be the fact your oil was overfilled, it seems a bit coincidental that the leak has only appeared after the oil change? I once added 4 ltrs of oil extra when doing an oil change on a Mini (Don't ask  ) and had oil leaking from everywhere  .
Good luck,
Regards
Tom

Thank you for your warm welcomes
As regards my oil leak as Tom mentions the engine tray collects oil and only drips where the holes are I just hope its not the cylinder heads leaking £££££

its probably worth checking the breathers up top, its probably coming from there. I'd also clean out the plenum, as its boud to have been gunked up...

overfilling is a bad thing...

i'd check the source of the leak before worrying.

and even then i wouldnt worry... some would say they are broke if they dont leak ;)

An update on my search for the oil leak on my 964
Took off the undertray today to give me a hope in finding the problem I will have to get the degreaser out as there is a light film all over the l/h bank
My biggest concern is that I have just had the car serviced and have nice new shiny fasteners on the rocker cover lids within the engine bay but on the lower two rocker covers they are held by dull nuts suggesting they have not been removed !!
I am now wondering if I have had all plugs replaced now ?
I will have to check this weekend if I have time

Did they do the valve clearances on the service? If they did it maybe a weeping rocker cover gasket.

The leak appears to be coming from the rms as it has a drip on the gearbox engine join I think?

It wont be the head gasket problem.
If you have never replaced any oil seals, pipes then its probably due some.
Ive just had all the oil pipes changed and a few oil seals sorted. Now its bone dry, for now

What oils seals do you mean
I know its leaking from around the bell housing area or above as I have degreased the underside of the engine it also only appears to leak while runnning

I didnt do the repairs myself, but Jhon at unit11 told me that my leaks where caused by sum corroded oil pipes and a few seals :?
I cant tell you which ones or where they are located, but i know that they perish with time causing leaks.

Its the RMS leaking
After degreasing the underside of the engine and letting the engine idle for about 10 mins a drip of oil appeared on the crank case just below the engine gearbox split behind the flywheel
So I suppse while the crank is turning the seal is weeping
Engine out job "yipee"
