| Post subject: | Tiptronic or not tiptronic? |
I have been looking for a Boxster 987 for a while and have been offered a 54 plate with a around 50000 on the clock for £13.5k. The only thing that is causing me to hesitate over the purchase is that it has the tiptronic gearbox. This will be my first Porsche and first semi-automatic of any description. Any views would be welcome on the benefits/drawbacks of tiptronic over manual and whether I will have diffuculty reselling it. Many thanks Pete |

The Boxster is good, for the 3rd time today I'm going to say "I'd have one", and I've never driven a Porsche tip'. Did have a 1998 Audi estate that was tip' and it was good, so can't see a problem. Take it for a test drive, you'll soon know. |

My Boxster's a Tip, and (touch wood) I've never had any problems with it. I have heard that they arevery expensive to repair though, should they go wrong. I suppose one good thing is that a hell of a lot of new Porsche's are sold with auto/semi-auto boxes, so that must say something. Each to their own really, I find it very easy around town in full auto, with the added spice of kick-down, or swap to semi- if needed for acceleration. They also have rev limiters on, so at (for example) Santa Pod, pop it in to manual and bury your foot into the carpet - it changes up for you when it reaches the rev limiter. My 911 is manual and I love the experience there too. As has been said - try them both, see what you like. Get to your local meet and ask about too. Get as much advice as you can, only you can decide. It's all about preference and feel. |

Hi Pete, It's already been said but I'll say it again, you need to try it to be sure. Many years ago I was offered an immaculate 968 Coupé with a Tiptronic gearbox. I loved the look of the car and bought it without thinking too much about the gearbox. I then spent the next 12 months trying to work out whether I liked it or not (I traded in a manual 968 for it) and eventually came to the conclusion that I did. When I came to start a family I bought an Audi with a Tiptronic gearbox because it suited the type of driving I did and if you ever get stuck in traffic you'll understand how wonderful these gearboxes are. Now I don't wish to confuse you, but I decided to buy another 968 and decided not to go for a Tiptronic because: 1. I wasn't going to drive it a lot. 2. I was planning on avoiding lots of traffic. 3. I seemed to remember that the Tiptronic was slightly slower than the manual. As it turns out I ended up buying this car viewtopic.php?f=25&t=34&start=525 Just scroll down and you'll see a green 968. 1. You'll notice it has a Tiptronic gearbox. 2. It was my old car that by some strange coincidence I managed to buy back from the guy I sold it to. 3. It doesn't seem slow at all. I've been in a 2009 Boxter with a Tiptronic gearbox and that car was VERY fast. Good luck. Regards, RD |
