This reminded me of the battles between the Porsche drivers Gerhard Mitter and Rolf Stommelen in 1967 and 1968 in The European Mountain Championship. In 67 they had a 910/8" Bergspyder" and took four wins and three seconds each,Mitter taking the title due to a single third place. Then in 1968 Porsche brought out the 909 which had a transaxle and moved the engine and driver further forward vastly improving the handling. They had aluminium space frames and titanium coil springs and were very much leading edge technology of the time. The engine was the 2.2 Type 771 flat eight derived from the Type 753 used in the 1962 Type 804 Grand Prix car.Only two 909s were made and Mitter took his third hillclimb championship. The drivers also competed in the sports car championship of the time including Le Mans,Nurburgring etc in 907s and 910s with various engines 6 and 8 cylinder.Another Porsche driver ,Vic Elford, won the Monte Carlo rally and the Daytona 24hrs as well as being a Grand Prix driver in 1968.Great days for Porsche and also for one schoolboy who waited eagerly each month for Motor Sport to come out so I could read all about it! :)
