Hi All,

Just a quick message to let you all know about a spate of petrol thefts that are occuring. With increasing fuel prices, thieves are turning to breaking locks of tanks and siphoning out the fuel. In some cases, they've been drilling a hole in the bottom of the tank!

I hope they don't do this to any '44's. Am I right in saying that replacing the fuel tank requires gearbox and suspension removal to drop the tank out the bottom of the car?

A full 80 litre tank on a '44 is going to be a field day for the thieves. Although I park off road, I may start to half fill the tank from now on.
Keep an eye out - you've been warned.

Yup fuel tank replace on a 944 (or24/68) is a major PITA with transaxle out etc. The problem is 1/2 or 1/4 or full tank the damage is the same. Sooner or later one of these herberts is going to cause a spark whilst doing this & he'll win a Darwin award.
The slight advantage the 944 has is that it is so low that they may go to something easier as in higher.

And its not just petrol either ! , many of us country folk rely on heating oil & normally have 1000 to 2000 litres in a tank on delivery . Even though it cheeper then petrol thieves are fitting special tanks in the boot of their cars/vans to nick the lot . 1000 = 450 quid :(

Leaving a couple of Mastiffs out helps mind

We have been warned around here about 4WDs being stolen for robberies. Quite a few have been lifted from the village.
I need to move mine to a better position I think :-)
