Can only speak with confidence about the 928, but provides basis for estimate of 944 numbers.

Last year around 1500 928s undertook an MOT test (one of the 928 UK list members obtained this data from DVLA). This excludes some cars which may be roadworthy but SORN long-term, but I magine that's a very small number, so say 1500 owners in UK (though I know some with several!).

About 60,000 928s were built in total 1978-95.

944 manufacture covered a shorter period (1982-1991), but 163,000 cars were built in that period. Let's make the (big) assumption that the 944 and 928 were not relatively different in popularity in the UK compared with other countries. Fewer really early 944s compared with 928s, but more relatively youthful 928s (though in its last few years, 928s were not selling well at all...).

So back of envelope estimate of around 4,000 944s on the road here?

I suspect that's an under-estimate, based on fact that 944s are cheaper to run, the big bills (which may force an owner to scrap a car) are lower, and last but not least there are far more specialists around to help keep these cars on the road (there is precisely 1 928 specialist).

Bet 944 buffs here have a more accurate figure - would be interesting to see the reality.

One further comparison - about 4000 928s in total were sold in the UK, so if we know the number for 944s can refine the estimate.

I've got a feeling it was around 7000 & don't ask me to substantiate that number. But pretty sure I saw it in a mag a while ago.

Some interesting research done by the BBC gives MOT passes ansd failures. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8456116.stm which gives an interesting spreadsheet for all makes and models , albeit based on 2007 data. In summary there were 4062 MOT passes and 2445 failures for 944s in 2007.It even gives the failures by type.

Saw an interesting comment in the PCGB magazine this month that over 70% of all Porsches produced are still on the road, so highly likely he numbers are that high.

Just to echo Graham's comments, thanks alot Toby. That's what I love about this forum people going the extra mile to help answer your questions. Although I did lose a few hours of my life last night trying to find the worst offenders (non Porsche)
