The US govt has released details of the 700,000 vehicles scrapped under the "cars for clunkers" scheme.

List includes 6 x 928s and 6 x 944s!

Could be worse - apparently 1047 assorted Jags met their automotive maker as well as 5000+ Mercs (including a 500E - wasn't engine built at Porsche factory?) and 6 Maseratis.

Very green eh?

Who the hell scrapped a 97 DB7 Volante? Also I don't get the scrappage of cars from 2006, or am I just reading it all wrong?

its to do with mpg, but there are some surprising cars on that list. i read in classic car (IIRC) that the car most benefitting from the UK scrappage is the kia picanto !!

The US scheme is very different from ours.

The scrapped car simply has to have below 18mpg (the lower the mpg, the higher the trade-in credit). The new car has to have mpg better than 22mpg (hmm, not much of a green bonus given the energy involved in building the new, more economical vehicle) unless it's a 4x4, when it just has to be 18mpg or more!

In the UK car had to be 10+ years old. No such requirement in US, in fact cars older than 25 years were ineligible.

We had a rigorous MOT requirement on scrapped car. In US you had to have owned car for a year (like here), but roadworthiness was expressed as "must be able to drive it to the dealer"!

Some of the more exotic cars on the list have been attributed to computer input error, and/or some dealers abusing the scheme by faking trade-ins (hope that's true of the poor 928s!)
