Twelve thousand pounds!

I've just bought a 928 S4 (1989) and looking at the history reveals that it was bought by a Mr Michael Smith of London in late 1997. The poor sod kept the 928 for 18 months, during which time it cost him £12,007 in repairs/maintenance....he appears to have thrown in the towel in early 1999 and sold it on.
The next owner (a Mr Samuals of Putney) spent £1,000 almost immediately, then sold it after his last invoice listed a further £1,000 of jobs needed.

First two services cost the first owner of mine £1300 and £1600 in 1985/86. Madness??

Well, an update. I've had to spend £1,000 pretty much immediately on my 928 just to get it into a condition where I can use it. (new sump gasket, cam belt inspection/tensioner rebuild)

It's very candid of you to post this Lightning!

Don't feel bad at all about it. I bought my current S4 in April to replace a very good one (Paul Anderson's verdict) on which I'd spent about £6K in 3 years. It's a lovely 928.

I've already spent over £400 on current one just doing little jobs and nice-to-do stuff (new plugs, various trim pieces and seals renewed, air filter, mirror switch, wipers, headlight adjuster motor, couple of vacuum valves). Many owners wouldn't have bothered buying any of these items but I'm fussy.

Have also spent another several hundred quid on parts which I've not yet fitted, including spare items picked up on ebay which I don't actually need but was able to pick up very cheaply (brand new starter motor, sunroof motor amongst other stuff). I record expenditure on these in service record as/when I fit them.

You can pick these cars up for Fiesta money but you can't run them on Fiesta money, not if you want to keep them anywhere near tip-top condition. Take out depreciation though (pretty much zero at this age) and I still think they are a compelling ownership proposition in terms of economics, as is any decent example of an older Porsche.

First year or so of ownership is painful for most of us I think but once done the smile factor and knowledge you wont lose that investment far outweighs the painful start. My Golf GT which I bought new in 06, has just under 17k miles on it, has now lost £10k and is fast approaching what my 944 will be worth and I know which car I like driving the best.

Yep. Bought a new Ford van last october for £14,000. Now could do with a larger one as I have bought a boat...the van is like new, I've looked after it, 12k miles, rang them today and they offered £6,000.

I've also been buying parts for the 928...I am the same! Centre console hinge kit, new front undertray, various small plastic parts, and second hand bits off ebay.

Porsche dealer...£133.94 plus VAT. That's the larger plastic front part of the undertray. The kind of part which a lot of people would not bother with, as you can't even see it! But mine was knackered, and how much longer will they be available new?

Thanks Lightning. Not as much as I thought from opc. My undertrays spend more time off car than on as they are a faff and I'm always thinking of next job to do, but front tray is missing the two extensions at front corners. May treat car when feeling flush.

No wonder they break off lol...

Mine are ally...both the big rear tray and the S2 smaller front tray that butts up to it with the two long legs that go upwards...
