Lo all, ive been getting sadly heavily in to learning about the different 944's of late and one thing is bothering me , probably shouldnt I know but you know how it is.

I have googled it to death but so many similar figures are quoted. Which is quicker ( or better) to drive out of the 16 valve 2.5 in the S or the 2.7 that came after. Has anyone actually driven both of these to compare , I'll bet some of you have

Cheers Mas

Hello, :)
All depends on the condition. I'll say that again. It all depends on the CONDITION. You ask on pistonheads & the cry will go up. Get an S2 because 20 years ago that was the best model. But that was 20 years ago. I would have a lux, 2.7 or an S. Or Turbo or an S2 for that matter. There all good cars just different. But it the bodys rotten or the engines overdue a rebuild it doesn't matter a bit what model it is. It won't pull.
Join the club first & go & try some. Learn what to look for & what to avoid. Save yourself a fortune. But get one Definitely :D

Edit. 2.7 some bits hard to get now like the water pump. S has 16v's & two cams that wear & may cost big money for a head overhaul. In the bargain basement the 2.5 is the best. But I would look at anything that comes up. 2.7 has more torque & the S more Horses. In theory.

Thanks for the reply fence hugging though it was lol , to be honest I'd be a bit embarrased to join a club having not even bought any kind of porsche might sound sully to you but I'd feel a bit of a wol doing that hehehehe.

Mind you im really struggling to find any dealers round here with any 944s at all I can test drive , the way its going I may have to buy a good but cheeper one and if i like it keep I to sell on and buy another better one does that sound weird .

You mentioned going to a meet and seeing some cars too but again turning up as the bloke without a Porsche ( gulp and in a Volvo ( all beit a fast one) ) now that could be embarrasing. Anyway I hope you have realised not to take everything I say too seriously however I am serious about getting a 'hobby car' that is definately fixed in my mind

Cheers Mas

Mas by all means visit your local TIPEC meeting. Park the Volvo around the corner if need be
I'd far rather that people did that rather than buy a complete dung heap (& there are lots!) & it all end in tears. You'd be more than welcome at a meet & no one willthink worse of you for not having a Porsche.

PS.Where do you live?

Im in Herts ( near Stanstead) , we have a porsche specialist in B.Stortford down the road by country standards who seems to have a good reputation which is another thing that convinced me to take the plunge.

I like to think im an intelligent chap and wont rush in and buy a pile of junk , however good advice on tap is always listened to !

Maybe if I pop by I'll bring the T5 and not the D5 to try and keep my dignity :albino:

Mas, As Jim says. Much better to join the club first & learn what you want & get a good one. Then to buy a pile of scrap for an inflated price & go back to driving Volvos a bitter & twisted man  Really wish that I had joined the club first. I bought a pile of scrap & have spent 3 years & far too much money turning it into a real Porsche. Not finished yet. It will be off the road this winter for a gearbox & diff rebuild! Keeps me off the streets! Thanks to the credit crunch there are some very good cars out there. You might get somthing speical from a club member for far less than somthing nasty from a dealer.
By the way a T5 is a cool car. But you may need a 951 after that!

He he , yep the T5 is a lovely car even at 22 MPG , the wife drives it these days as I commute.

The question re a 2.5 16V versus a 2.7 was out of learning by the way I'm really only considering an S2 or a Turbo ( oh or a 968) so if anyone wants to out a good one at a fair price
( not im in a club its worth double  ) you know im looking.

If there is a meet or a drive up within reach I'd love to come just to look over all the cars and chat with the enthusiastic owners and hear the stories good and bad
( bet theres some of both) so I'll keep watching the forum and try to make a visit if thats O.K . Knowing me I'll struggle NOT to buy a car though so have a meet up quick

Mas

Good man, you're definately going with the 944T then as in your introductions post you were toying with a Boxster S. Turbo's are infinately more tunable and brilliant although I'm a bit biased  For the budget you were talking of, you're in the good well sorted 944T's price range. As mentioned rust is the biggest problem (youngest cars are 18 years old), then proper belt changes/servicing etc. Get to a club meet and a friendly member will probably have a look at prospective purchases with you. Has Richy S still got his Turbo S for sale? Can anyone confirm?

Andy

To answer your original question, the 2.7 has an 8v engine and when new delivered 165bhp at 5800rpm and 166lbft at 4200rpm. The S had a 2.5 16v engine and delivered 190bhp at 6000rpm and 170lbft at 4300rpm. All the roadtests at the time have the S as the quicker car (0-60, top speed etc) but you have to fully utilise the upper reaches of the rev range to get the most out of it.

As the guys have already said, 20 years down the line, its the overall condition of the car that is the most important criteria for buying a 944 these days.

p.s. you'll find that if its raining a lot of the namby pamby owners will come to the club meets in their 'other car' as well
