I use the HQR-2 system (completely solid-state, battery powered & records at 720x576 HQ). Check it out on http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk - nice friendly guys who will give you advice over the phone if required. They do a suction mount which really works for £30, although I usually use a mount on the roll-cage as there's less vibration. Many tracks (all the MSV ones in particular) have completely banned suction mounts inside the car.

All mounts are standard & should hold pretty much any camera designed to go on a mount. I've also got some footage of Silverstone GP circuit taken in/on 3 different cars: my GT3, a Radical SR3 race car & a KTM X-Bow, the latter 2 were on the suction mount so you can see the difference.

Those radical engines sound great - who needs a lambo on the track.

Do those bullet cameras give stereo or basic sound?

You wouldn't say that if you'd actually been there - my head was ringing with the intake roar for hours after. Even with earplugs!

It's not the camera that records the sound, it's a function of the recorder. All the solid-state HQ DV ones I've looked at only do mono unless you plug in an external mic (which I now do). Frankly, stereo is pretty pointless IMHO, given all the engine & wind noise.

I would be grateful if anyone who has used a bullet camera or camcorder that's produced good effects inside or outside the car and used mounts that haven't fallen off, could post here what model they have, or any advice from any movie camera owner. I was about to buy one then read a reviewer who said it gave jerky action shots, then I discovered from reviews that no camera seemed to work properly at all stages! Also unlike digital stills cameras sold in megapixels, camcorders/bullet cameras don't all seem to be advertised with the same video quality measure unless it's HD. (Personally I still think movies are things that should be on celluloid like the 8mm collection under the stairs next to the roll up screen.)

I'd actually been looking at their mounts so will call them and see what kind of cameras they'd hold plus other advice. I've also been wondering what Castle Coombe circuit is like so now I can see!!

Thanks for the sound observation as I saw a camcorder that did what I wanted HD, optical zoom etc but it didn't have stereo.

I've used the Sony Bullet cam with their Snow Cam1 kit (hired it in Chamonix) very clear results, when not covered in snow
