The emmisions light came on, local dealer couldn't work out the fault codes. The car went in yesterday for further inspection and a service, I had a call this evening to say don't bother picking your car up.

We've completed the service, but the technician in Germany thinks the timing chain has stretched and you will probably need a new engine.

Less than 12 months old with 22K on the clock.

I'm a bit surprised as it pulls as normal, ticks over like a bag of spanners though.

One second it's on 600 revs next on 1500 revs, so I new there was a problem :?

Vorsprung Durch Tecnic

Should have got the Alfa Sean!
One of my colleagues bought a brand spanking new Audi A5 around a year ago, every time I talk to him I hear a tale of woe, paint chipping off in big lumps, dash has been out mutiple times, MMI crashes regularly, gearbox & clutch replaced, myriad rattles..... & the list goes on. He is even more upset that A. he gets a Polo or similar when it goes in & B. he had a 160K Mondeo which was much less trouble. Never been convinced by VAG reliability & it seems even the Germans feel the same.

Aw, this sounds like a real shame. Does that mean all the time spent polishing and waxing it is now going to waste as they send you out a whole new car?

Sean

Was this a company car? I seem to recall it was?

Also, never heard of a timing chain stretching enough to cause that much damage :?

Get 'em to stick an air cooled flat 6 in it

I have heard from a number of Independent sources that they are more reliable

Then you could re-register it as a PorkVagen

Yup it's his Co. tool. Heard of quite a few chains stretching, Vauxhall had a problem on a couple of theirs & the SAABs do it catastrophically as in they break! As does the VR6 lump especially in Galaxys, it sits at the flywheel end & when that breaks it trashes most of the engine & is major work to fix.

It might not have caused much damage, but it sounds like a rare failure, so the factory might want to whole engine back to examine it.

Not so rare it seems a quick google got the times entry someone there awaiting an engine.

The guy in Germany has aked for the engine to be stripped. Oil pressure valves to be examined first.

Yup the chains are tensioned by oil pressure I'd guess so hence that line of thought.

Goes to show you can't beat the original :)

I had a VR6 Golf that I sold with 163,000 miles & it was still going strong when it was crashed at 190,000 miles. My current VR6 Golf has 104,000 & my Corrado Storm VR6 is on 90,000

Of course, it could be that Sean ragging it everywhere might just have contributed to its early demise
