Feck, how do they justify a 10% increase on the price of a stamp? It looks like we are paying for the hole in the pension pot.

Received the info today in the post Sean - just a bunch of greedy whatevers. You will notice that they have expressed the increase on letters in pence so it doesn't look as big, yet the increase on parcels and packets is shown as a percentage because it's 'only' between 3% - 5% and doesn't look as greedy. Of course if the postmen don't get a pay rise now they'll be on strike again soon. I'm so sad I've done the maths for everybody to swear at.

Letters -
Ist Class from 36p to 39p - 3p or 8.3% increase (although they don't offer a 1st class service)
2nd Class from 27p to 30p - 3p or 11.1% increase

Large letters (A4 envelopes etc)
Ist Class from 52p to 61p - 9p or 17.3% increase
2nd Class from 42p to 47p - 5p or 11.9% increase

Inflation will soon be below 2%, and bank of England interest rate is 0.5% - so you're right how do they justify it?

Pension pot? - The FSA (and this is a fact) were using the huge fines they imposed on companies to shore up their final salary pension scheme - now there's a 'jobs for the boys' establishment that I could write adverse information about for hours... and hours.... and hours.... If he were still alive John Wayne would be in charge of it!

Well they are the only postal service we have. TNT, DHL, ect only collect post from bussineses and get Royal Mail to sort and deliver to their (the other busineses) customers. I would possibly agree that some of it is going towards the pension defict, but I would think that some may be going towards the newer sorting machines going in to sorting offices and "modernising" the postal service. Trouble is that RM will only spend enough to get newer machines than they already have but not enough to buy up to date ones Mr. Brown or whoever thinks they should buy.

Rant over.

Having spent my working life in Royal Mail I feel somewhat peeved that RMs most profitable business was given away by the Postal services (RM hating) regulator i.e. bulk business mail, but RM has to do 'the final mile' that is to deliver it for less than it really costs, the Regulator again.
The current Govt who owns RM uses TNT etc to collect all mail from HMR&C DVLA etc etc. Talk about shoot yourself in your foot.
The Pension Fund has ginormous assets which Brown wants to grab, sell off and reduce the current Govt deficit leaving the next generation or two to pay the RM pensions out of taxation.

Rant over, support your local Post Office and RM by NOT taxing your car either on-line or by telephone.
