It's a great idea Jim, and I have frequently thought of opening up such a place for today's youth and their Corsas. It would keep them out of trouble and teach then something about car maintenance at the same time. Swing a lamp - when I was in the RAF, every base had a 'Car Club' - I don't know who thought up the name but it was so clever! In Germany it was a huge shed complete with lifts, ramps, all tools available, manuals available, technical expertise from the RAF mechanics who were turning their trade into a hobby, discounted spares, and so on. It was a great place to hang out. I remember back in Germany in 1980 when my Spitfire core plugs had popped out because I'd forgotten to put anti freeze in ....... but I learned... At a base in England it was an old hangar, and at another camp a purpose built garage. Some of the cars would stay in the places for years, and some of them were nice motors that just needed a bit of repair work doing - like a Lotus Esprit that needed a new nose, which was lying on the roof - it was there for the three years that I was at the camp. And before you all ask..... I was a fighter pilot, well that's what I tell the girls anyway

I didn't know the RAF were still using Spitfires in the 1980's!!! |

It was Halfords years ago who had self-service bays attached to loads of their stores. When they abandoned the idea they formed a joint venture with another motoring org - maybe AA or one of the fast-fit chains - to utilise the facilities offering 'professional' servicing. That died a death too so those bays are now empty. Personally I would leap at chance to hire a 2 post-lift as it would make quite a few jobs faster/more comfortable. Having said that most of my 928 projects take ages as I get stuck at certain points or have to order needed parts, so don't think any garage offering this would be thrilled to have my car stuck on their ramp for weeks on end. On verge of getting a scissor lift for my garage anyway but would be lovely to have all the space (and warmth) of pro workshop. |

My wife helped make a television documentary on the scheme for BBC. Hugely popular with the lads concerned and apparently very effective in keeping them out of trouble (the car maintenance opportunity I mean, not my wife). |
