Post subject:  Historic tax

Hi...someone will have been through this already...so help please..

My 911 was registered in November 1982...so its 40 years old...
But I've just had a tax renewal notice (for £295) from DVLA ...it expires on 31 March 2023, and there was me thinking it was exempt this year.

On the Gov.UK site it states... 'You can apply to stop paying for vehicle tax from 1 April 2022 if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1982'...but no reference to when 'you' can stop paying from April 2023...
I've done a bit of ferreting around on the internet (e.g. there is a leaflet INF34) and it looks as if I have to fill in a V10 form and take it to a post office (   )...and it is, in fact, exempt, even though I've been billed for it..

Any comments would be welcomed....especially if I can avoid having to visit a Post Office!

Thanks, Kevin

Hi,

My 924 was first registered 24th April 1982 and going through this as well.

MOT exemption happens automatically and owners dont need to do anything for this.

TAX exemption is weirdly complicated. Essentially on the 1st April the year after your car turns 40 you can apply to have your car change to historic status (trip with the V5 to the post office needed to do this - sorry!) which then puts the tax exemption in place.

You need to take:

the log book (V5C) in your name
your vehicle tax reminder letter (V11), if you have one
an MOT certificate that’s valid when the tax starts, or evidence if your vehicle’s exempt from an MOT (V112)
an insurance certificate or cover note (only in Northern Ireland)

I applied for mine to be changed to historic in January and after waiting 6 weeks got a letter back from DVLA saying on the 1st April I could apply for it to be changed. I presume the info on Gov.UK will update on the 1st April to cover cars built before January 1983.

thanks
