Anyone got an old engineers vice they don't need and would sell me, ideally something like a Record number2, think they were about a three and a half inch vice? (the old engineer in question is the lump of metal, not the guy winding the handle)

Cheers Steve

My old one was knackered a few years ago by Paul Greer putting in his wheel bearings on his 944.
I found a new one locally on Ebay for sensible money. Wasn't far away so I could collect.

Yes Jim, have just had a quick scan round the usual suspects and there are a few number 2's around, can't believe the prices though, they used to be a quid or two over scrap!!

There's a No.3 for sale locally for £65 - any good? Or a No.2 in Soton for £40 that looks like it's been at the bottom of the Solent.

Yes thanks Jim I have seen a few now, quite a number of the less expensive ones are totally --agged, not really looking to renovate a project, will find one that someone has been stubbing their toe on each time they go in the shed, and want to see the back of?

Buy as early a model as you can find. Later models are made by Irwin and the quality is just not the same. Alternatives worth considering are Woden and Prentiss and early Snap-on vices. Later one are made from Wibblepoo and are best avoided. Engineering shops, schools and colleges that are having a refit are often a good source for cheap, used vices although there is every chance they have lead a bit of a life but you may have several to choose from.
