Post subject:  New paint / track day dilemma

Hi All.

My car went into the bodyshop earlier in the year for rust repairs and a full respray. Unfortunately it's taken a lot longer than originally expected, not because of the car needing more work but because of the shop taking a lot on, some sickness, and because Crimewatch came round to film (more about that sometime in a future thread).

Anyway I wasn't in a major rush to have the car back and so was happy that it takes as long as it takes. However, I'm booked on the club track day July 16th and I'm wondering if I'm going to make it. The car should be ready in the next two weeks but I'd like to get it in for a service plus a couple of jobs that need doing and have it checked over with the track day in mind (the guy I take it to races so I'm hoping he'll have a good idea what to look out for).

So what are your thoughts? Assuming I get the car back in time to get it to the garage, my main worry is the paint. Might it still be too soft, how long should new paint be left before taking it out for a major run?

Thanks Allan, that's good to know. Fingers crossed it all comes together in time. It will be my first club outing so I'm looking forward to meeting people and I don't want to miss it.

Well... The front of my trackday 944 looks like it has been shot blasted and at least some of that came from Blyton last year. I don't much care because that's what the 2.7 is for. I'm a bit precious about my S2's paintwork and won't take that on track for that reason.

Really, it depends how worried you are about marring your nice new paintwork with some stone chips. You should expect to collect some on a track day.

Do a search on "Nose Bra"

One up for sale last year, might give the front some protection on the track day!

Thanks Glenn and Clive.

I did wonder about these http://www.carid.com/1991-porsche-944-bras/

Anyone ever try them? Wonder if it will fit my UK S2 ok, and if it would get here in time...

I'd say give the paint two weeks to fully harden. I was at the paint shop checking on mine today and he said he is leaving it as long as possible before colour sanding it.

I finally got an email back from Cover Craft stating that the nose bra would only fit the USA model. I'm not sure if it was just a "computer says no" answer - how different are the front of the USA and the ROW 944S2?

Lots of masking tape on the exposed areas. Seen plenty of cars turn up at shows and track days like this
