Having had the top end of my 2.5 8v rebiult earlier this year and completed the first thousand miles with no problems we decided to head for the hills! We had a good run up to Arrochar at the top of Loch Long and stayed at a nice hotel called the Village Inn the first night.Next morning there was a mist over the Loch which cleared during breakfast to reveal The Cobbler,a hill whose summit looks like a cobblers last! We drove up Glen Croe and over Rest and be Thankful ,round the top of Loch Fyne to Inverary which we hadnt been to since our honeymoon (1976).From there we headed up Glen Aray, round the top of Loch Awe,through the Pass of Brander to Connel,Portnacroish,Ballachulish and Fort William at the head of Loch Linnhe. We had a walk round Fort William to get the circulation going again and then drove on past Spean Bridge to the Commando monument. This is biult on a hilltop and whichever direction you look there are peaks in the background, amazing views. From here we drove along the side of Loch Lochy to Invergarry, turned left and drove past Loch Garry,Loch Loyne and Loch Cluanie to Glen Shiel. The hills here are called the Five Sisters and the scenery is very impressive indeed. At every turn of the road another series of hills appears, towering above the road.It makes you feel very small! We carried on almost to the Skye bridge but turned off to Plockton where Hamish Macbeth was filmed. What a gorgeous little spot that is! After a nice walk round we drove over the Skye bridge and through the Cuillin hills.By now it had started to rain and this road was rough and slippery but the old 944 coped with everything brilliantly and we stopped in Portree for tea then onto the B&B near Edinbane overlooking Loch Greshornish. It was dark by now so we had some wine and a good chat with our hosts then an early night to awake to some lovely views over the Loch.Over the next few days we saw as much as we could of Skye and its wildlife including Golden eagles and Sea eagles, seals and much more. Our accomodation was at Tir Alainn, see
stay@skyebnb.co.uk and we would recommend them to anyone heading up this way, a lovely purpose biult B&B,nice people and breakfasts that keep you going all day! All too soon we had to head back and drove back down through Glencoe to stop again at Arrocher for the night where, would you believe,we met a couple who live two streets from us ! Next day we called at Moffat, had a walk round and returned to the car to find the fan was still running. We later stopped at Richmond for an hour and again the fan wouldnt switch off,so when we got home I disconnected the battery and next day replaced the fan switch .Apart from that the car was a joy to drive even on rough roads and in poor conditions. We used 4 1/2 tanks of ordinary unleaded and the first four tankfuls returned 34.5mpg,32.5,29.3and 35.3.I put in about a pint of oil,no water(makes a change) and we did 1110 miles altogether! It was a brilliant trip.a great drive combined with gorgeous scenery, first class accomodation ,lots of wildlife ,nice pubs etc.,oh and they do seem to have public loos in Scotland, something we re not used to around here!We re saving up now for more petrol to get us back up there again!
