I went with my stepdad to collect his Boxster yesterday after having full M030 suspension kit at Northway

Sadly it broke down on way home
Sat on M25 (lane 3) been in very slow traffic for 20 mins and it just died

Bloody scary sitting in lane 3 waiting for police, luckily a top bloke in a brand new Range Rover pulled over and towed me to the hard shoulder
lots of waiting to get off of motorway to a safe area, then AA from there to home.

It did start again and AA followed me home to make sure it didn't cut out.
Sadly nothing showing on AA's OBD reader, so will head upto Porsche Byfleet later to see if their one shows any faults
I'm thinking that maybe the crankshaft hall sensor is on it's way out and the heat stopped it working correctly

That's a bugger, sorry to hear that.

Must have been scary, fair play to Mr Rangie!

Thats a close call!

When the car died, was it with a misfire/rough running first, or just a straight cut of engine power?

If there are no codes, present or pending, crank sensors - often when they fail, the ecu wont register a code as it just thinks the engine has been switched off, ie rotation stopped.

I would also be thinking possibly wiring or relay problems, as the ecu may have just been "switched off" by lack of power....and that would of course not generate a code.

If it was a cam sensor failure, the ecu normally would register a code for that and it probably would not stop the engine dead.

If the garage you are going to have a scope they can assess the quality of the crank sensor signal - you could use a heat gun on the sensor when up on a ramp to try and bring a heat failure on if its thought that it is the cause. Alternatively, given the risk and danger of future failure, its probably worth swapping the sensor to rule it out - they are only circa £100.

I suspect however, sadly, if nothing is found..... it will happen again...until the fault will eventually become permanent.

David

yes it just died with the engine being pretty hot.

Drove it to Porsche Byfleet yesterday, they went to start it to take it into workshop and no start.
Crankshaft sensor ordered but nothing definite on fault codes.
